While the layout and service is still pleasant, the food has taken a frankly worrying nose dive. This is the most expensive christmas buffet on the whole island of penang and paying this does not mean quality. The lack of choice was compounded by the...fact that what was available was in terms of meat touch and poor quality, and in terms of veg under cooked to the point of eing inedible . What was worrying is this was pointed out to the chef who said he agreed and would take care if it. They didn't and the almost raw sprouts sat there for over 90 min despite wait staff asking them to take care of it as well. Desserts were much less than previously and although fine not worth the extra expense. It was a Christmas buffet with out turkey, and replace by a rather tough beef Wellington and a salmon. We have been for Christmas Dinner on quite a few times and this is the worst of them. We mentioned these concerns and received a rather flippant sorry from the cashier. We were also informed by wait staff we were not the only ones complaining. For the money choose a different hotel is our advice.More

Whether you are coming for al la carte or the international buffet, the Spice Market Cafe really does have something for all tastes. Great variety including Malay, Chinese, Indian, Western and Seafood. I would like to thank Jonathan for helping to create the most amazing...29th birthday surprise for my friend, Chong. Thank you for making his birthday so special. This is such a beautiful hotel and we will definitely be back soon!More

We have eaten here on several occasions on past visits and have always been impressed not only with the food on offer but also by the standard of service. Unfortunately, on our last visit, whilst the food was just as good as before, the service...fell well below the usual standards for a Shangri-La hotel. It was a special occasion being my partner’s 50th birthday so I had booked a table in advance for the seafood buffet. I accept that being a Saturday evening! It was extremely busy with guests. We were rather surprised when we were shown a small table outside of the main restaurant where it was impossible to sit opposite each other. It was an age before any member of staff came to enquire about drinks which then took another long period of time before they arrived. We certainly could not fault the food which was absolutely delicious and in plentiful supply so many thanks and congratulations to the chefs. The problem was the service or rather the distinct lack of it. On more than one occasion we had to clear our own table and we noticed that others seated in the area outside the main restaurant had to do the same. Maybe there is a shortage of staff but there seemed to be plenty in the main restaurant. Eventually we spotted a waiter and ordered more drinks but they never arrived. In the end we left…the food was excellent but the service poor…so I couldn’t rate the restaurant excellent as I’ve been able to do so in the past.More

Whether you are coming for al la carte or the international buffet, the Spice Market Cafe really does have something for all tastes. Staying at the hotel, we enjoyed one evening of al la carte dining and three of the international buffets night - each...throughly enjoyable. The choice on offer is excellent - and the dishes change frequently too which is great if you are staying in the hotel for a longer period (or live local and dining out). Highly recommended.More

We are guests here for quite awhile, and are currently on day 8, dining in-house everyday as a family of 4. There are not many places that do good quality European food in Penang, and this is one of them. The local options on the...menu are as good quality-wise as the European options, and topped off with good service staff, dining here is more than pleasant. Tip: It always gets busy Fridays-Sundays.More

Ordered the Penang laksa, prawn noodles, club sandwich and spaghetti bolognaise for lunch. Impressed by the big portions- you could possibly share one bowl of noodles with two adults actually. Wait staff were very friendly and attentive.

Our favourite for fanciest, freshest and high quality food spread possibly in penang !! Service despite a slight hiccup of table reservation arrangements was prompty settled by the staff despite the high traffic. Special shout out to Norisah who got everything sorted out and always...remember her for her congenial and efficient service. Shangrila Rasa Sayang consistently never disappoints at all.More

I had cocktail and dinner at this restaurant during my recent trip to Rasa Sayang. The cocktail was perfect given the hot sunny day and dinner was served rather fast, and it was equally good. But, I still feel that they are overpriced.
