Decided to eat here based on previous reviews and the assurance that even although it's a meat eaters paradise vegetarians will also be catered for. It is a 10 minute walk from the port easiest way is to walk up the road to Paradise hotel then turn immediately left after the hotel and Mixalios is straight in front of you.... More

I think the best place to have dinner in koufonissi for: food (no fish but fantastic their grilled meats ); location (the best place with moonlights on the sea); relaxing and really greek atmosphere (congratulations to mikhalios's family and her staff). Price perfect for very big portions (probably You will aren't able to finish all you have to eat but... More

Do not consider visiting Koufonisia without a stop at Mixalios. Especially you are a meat lover...you will deeply regret it. This is a must due to the bio-meat they use. To begin with the hidden location is this year much better indicated due to more signs and better lighting. The tables are scattered in the garden and balcony and the... More

We visited this restaurant as it was recommended for meat. We took the back road (shorter) and as we were walking kept wondering what we would find. As soon as we saw the place it was like an oasis after a10 minute walk in the dark. We left from the pathway in front of the shop ( light with candles)... More

I'd intended to visit here in any case, but as it was recommended to me by a lad in one of the village bars, we had to try. Worked out well as that day we'd walked to Pori and not got back til it'd gone dark, so pushing 10pm by the time we went to Mixalios. It's up a dirt... More

Definately a neat lovers paradise. The food is good and not expensive for the quality of the quantity. The dishes are traditional Greek and the ingredients local and of very high quality.. Only complaint would be that service is abiiiiit slow. Is a family restaurant with the family members running it but it is popular enough that they fluid do... More

You felt like you were in a real taverna. Family run. Good rustic local Greek food. Did a good job on a busy night. Child friendly.

But slow service. Bifsteki are among the best in the Cycladic islands . Great salads and a little different than the usual Greek salads you find everywhere.

Had some meat dishes! Chops a bit hard and chewy, beef minced meat a bit heavy! Portions were really big! Service not happy and we were trying a lot to request simple things like water or check. I would not visit again. Not bad but better options exist

Description
Mixalios GRILL HOUSE is a family-owned restaurant that was established in 1999 and offers a wide range of dishes with ingredients that are all locally sourced, either from our own farms in Koufonisia, but also Keros and Naxos.

Mixalios, our grandfather, grew up in the neighboring island of Kato Koufonisi, where he still has his farm
of goats and sheep. Every day, all through the year, at 5 am, Mixalios takes his boat and goes to Kato Koufonisi to take care of the animals and comes back by sunset.

But the family also has goats on the uninhabited island of Keros, where they graze freely. Only one fresh-water well exists on the island, by the shore, and all animals descend every day from the mountains to drink from there. Between May and June, Mixalios and his son, Giannis Prasinos, visit the island early in the morning, place a large flat stone on the well’s opening blocking access to the water, and this allows them to easily capture animals waiting to get a drink!

Giannis, the owner of the GRILL HOUSE, also has small farms at Ano Koufonisi, where he feeds his cows, free-range roosters, and pigs. All the animals are fed grain that is grown by Giannis himself on his lands both at Ano and Kato Koufonisi.

Anna, our grandmother, makes three types of local cheese, prepared from our own cow and goat milk on a wood fire, using a traditional recipe. We serve xinomizithra, a soft, white, sour cheese, which is light in fat; ladotiri, which is a sharp, hard cheese, aged in oil; and feta.

Yiayia Anna, also makes rakomelo, a sweet liqueur with raki, cinnamon and a mixture of honey and sugar.

Maria, Gianni’s wife, makes “halva” pastry, which is made with semolina, cinnamon, and syrup. It is topped with her specialty, a “spoon sweet” made with fresh carrots.

Enjoy your meal!
