This has to be my father’s favorite restaurant. He often goes there with my mom. When he gives a treat to his friends, this place is also his choice.
His favorite dish - chicken curry kapitan. My mom’s favorite dish - hong bak.
This afternoon,...we ordered many dishes: chicken curry kapitan, hong bak, inche kebin (nyonya fried chicken), asam prawns, jiu hoo char (stewed mexican turnip with shreds of rehydrated dried squid), spring rolls, otak-otak. And two single-serve soups: kua lala (mint soup), too tor thng (pig stomach pepper soup).
For those with room in the tummy, we also ordered pengat and green bean desserts.More
Many people who like "Chinese and/or Malausian dishes" will also really enjoy "Nyonya cuisine"-- which is a result of intermarriage between Chinese and Malaya during the early days of Chinese settlement in Malaysia (& other SE Asian countries). This cuisine has developed over the years...as Penang emerged as a place for "serious foodies". The variety of welll ptrepared dishes will also appeal to vegetarians. We were there with a large group of friends (about 50 of us), and the service was very good as was the food. The location at Straits Quay (in Tanjong tokong) adds to the ambience. A visit will prove to be memorable.

Very flavourful Nyonya dishes that has distinct taste in each different dish so good you can it have each dish alone with just white rice! Since we are not locals and want to try as many, we ordered many. Top on the list is Petai...Prawns (you’d love this if you like petai the local stinky beans), Acar Hu fried fish in tamarinds and vinegar, Kapitan Chicken. Only one dish was below expectation as my Dad’s one is the best in the world - save the Ju Hu Char for another placeMore
We were at Straits Quay, Penang scouting for something to fill our stomach when we bumped into this restaurant. The food is pretty tasty, and the Jiu Hu Char (sweet turnip 沙葛) was good. We also ordered rendang ayam and petai sambal which is traditionally...Nyonya food synonymous with spicy taste. The restaurant is clean, serving is fast and the waiters are nice.More
Recommended by owner of the lodge where we were staying. Did not disappoint. Food were quality at a reasonable, affordable price We ordered the small portions which are good for 3 if not 4 persons with average appetite.
Have heard good things from a lot of folks, including here on TA.
However, found the dishes to be hit and miss.
The Tau Eu Bak (soy sauce based pork dish), Jiu Hoo Char, fish Berlanda and Inche Kabin are excellent Vs other nyonya restaurants...in Penang. However, the Curry Kapitan and Choon Pheah are disappointing. Curry Kapitan wasn't fragrant and doesn't have enough of a kick to it while Choon Pheah was more of a fried poh piah.
Had the above two delivered as it should have been made, I would have given it four stars.
The service staff, while friendly, were not sufficiently knowledgeable ( as you would expect from a restaurant that is quite pricey) about the dishes. That would have made it five stars.
Hence the three star rating.More
