Having lived in Malaysia for 10 years this has got to rank among one of the worse Hawker streets I have visited. The food we had was bad to ok, the Cendol was watery with no Coconut and the Beer was warm also. This maybe...acceptable to some people but if you come from Ipoh its just not acceptable quality and value so just give it a miss. Finally if you walk up in the daylight you will also see how filthy the street is.More

Every evening hawker's stalls start lining one stretch of the lane all the way to the Jalan Macalister junction. Tables are set up in the open, even occupying part of a parking lot of an office complex. The lane is accessible from Macalister Road and...Dato Kramat Road. All in there are about 30 plus wheel stalls and ten permanent hawker's stalls operating from the coffee shops in the vicinity and substantial variety of street food to choose from. It would not be exaggerating to say that every type of Penang street's food you can think of, you can find it right here. You have to bring a big appetite as there are many delicious goodies at this place. Expect to sit on colourful plastic tables and chairs on the roadside. We started off with the Sambal Sotong (Stir Fried squid / octopus) from a vendor who was managing the crowed very nicely. The stir fried octopus and accompany dip are simply delicious. The aroma is so seductive that could drive anyone insane. A feast for the eyes and the stomach — picture compressed stir fried octopus with a spicy chili dip and topped with spicy dried shrimp chili garnish. Next look out for the stall that sells Fried Surimi Crab and Fish. We had a plate of mixed crispy deep fried crab sticks and fish. The deep fried crab sticks and fish are relatively more crispy and crunchy than stir fried octopus. The tender melt in mouth crab meat has a smoky aroma. The texture of tempura batter fish fillets are grainy yet soft. The flavorful brown chili sauce is hot and tangy, gives a nice punch on the palate. The Satay stall at corner of the road is not to be missed. The richly marinated meat is grilled perfectly over charcoal till it become tender and smoky then served with the tasteful peanut sauce. Try out their both Chicken Satay and Pork Satay accompanied with an addictive spicy dip. For a sweet ending must-try Cendol that is served in a tall glass, with rice flour jelly, cream corn and kidney beans that give a welcome crunch to the silky smooth coconut milk and palm sugar syrup. Complete the meal with a fresh green apple juice.More

A host of Penang's local must-eats including Lor Mee, Char Kway Teow (RM 9, rather steep), Prawn Noodle, BBQ, Wonton Mee, roasted duck, roasted chicken, roasted meat, fried ngoh hiang, fried egg with oyster and prawns, satays (pork, chicken, lamb), ice kachang, ice bobo chacha;...with prices less than RM 10. Crowded and lively at nights, capturing the true street food environment. The good thing is that we gotta tried all the delish food in one place!More

It is the best cafe with street food combination on our Malaysia trip. Is it aka Makeshift hawker centre. Fast pace, dizzying dishes coming non stop and since we all paying cash, at the end we do not even know how much was the total....But one thing for sure, most of them are extremely cheap except grilled stingray. Chicken wings are the best and so also is Char Koay Teow - famous for cooked over charcoal. Those two are must try there. We also tried Hokkien mee (Penang variant), Curry mee, satay, sticky rice roll, fried rice and pork belly all good. Probably you might want to try stingray as well - I can guarantee you, it will be at least 2-3 times more expensive in Singapore and will not be as half good as here. I like the structure of cool arrangement of street food all across Malaysia. Cafe itself sells white coffee, tea and cold drinks. Cafe rent spaces around to food carts to sell various snacks to complete meals. But in this place, there are many food carts selling excellent food as above. It is rare to get such a place where are cylinders "firing" to get a great dining experience.More

We had char kway teow & fried rice from San cafe- not from the famous man, his queue was too long. The price for medium size was 11 ringgit each. The rice was nice, kway teow was ok. Found the price a bit expensive compare...to other places in Penang. Also had cendol from desert cart. No price on the board but she charged 5 ringgit each. Nothing really nice about it. Next day we went to Lebuh kweng kee for famous cendol tasted better and was only 3.20 ringgit each. Char Kway teow here was 7.50 ringgit.More

Penang is a place that attracted lots of migrants over the centuries. New Lane Hawker Centre seems to have attracted newbies to ply their new trade. This is why this place is not worth the visit.
