A Wednesday in winter and our first visit to this pub - restaurant. The place was full and we had difficulty parking at 1pm. Booking a table appeared to be essential. We were placed under a loud speaker playing pop music. The contented diners were all so engrossed that this was an unnecessary addition and to us an irritation. We... More

Lovely location, great staff, menu, beer and wine. Best steak and chips anywhere and you can take the dog! Need to book for the dinning room or take a chance getting seated in the bar. Lots of outside seating when it's warm. Can't recommend it enough.

As we used to be local, this is a great country pub,but you will have to do some research to find it,as its a difficult place to find. But when you do this is a gem **** Food great, from snacks to large meals Beer great loads of country ales, They used to have a micro brewery next door, but think they still... More

On a business trip in the area, we needed to find a spot for some lunch. I don't think we could have picked a better spot. The lunch menu was creative and extensive. Such a shame we only had 45 mins as we would have enjoyed exploring the menu and some of the more interesting looking dishes. Great bubble &... More

Saturday lunch time meal. We thought it would not be too busy (silly us), and we didn't book! We did get a table after 20 minutes and it was definitely worth the wait. Everything we ordered was exceptional quality. I would like to say that the chicken, ham pie was the best pie I have eaten in a very long... More

A Saturday lunch; our 10-and-12-year-olds ordered spaghetti Bolognaise from the children's menu and were unimpressed by grey mince; three adults ordered roast chicken, which was overcooked. With potato fondant and one wilted green leaf alongside, it was swamped in cloying gravy. We were sorry to see the dessert menu had lost its magic. The servers were, as always, excellent, but... Having read good reports we decided to try it for lunch. It was fairly busy but not full and we were welcomed and shown to our table. We found the menu choice somewhat limited and the food overrated and overpriced. Presentation took preference over quantity. The coffee was lukewarm to give it the benefit of the doubt. Locally there are better... More

Have been to the Alford Arms a few times and never had a bad meal but visited a couple of days ago and had our best yet. Naturally had the bubble & squeak which is a must, then our party had steaks, sausage and mash, chicken and everyone agreed - Fantastic

We had a wonderful meal in this extremely busy pub, full of diners. There was a waiting time of up to an hour for a table on the lunchtime we visited without a booking. This meant standing at the bar as there was not a spare seat inside, only outside in the thick fog & frost. So next time we... More

Description
A warm and welcoming country dining pub with open fire and muddy boots and dog friendly. People often describe the Alford as a gastro-pub, but we're not really comfortable with that tag. The term sounds too restauranty and cheffy. We've always wanted the Alford to be a great pub, where you just happen to be able to get great food. So tables in the dining room are available to book, but there's also the bar for drinkers with tables available on a first come, first served basis. The seasonal menu and daily specials balance originality with more traditional fare and we are firm believers in using local produce wherever possible. Hanging baskets and window boxes adorn the terrace and provide an alfresco dining area. Alongside is the village green and historic Ashridge Estate is right on our doorstep. Ramblers, dog walkers, bluebell admirers, mushroom foragers and cyclists regularly emerge from the surrounding countryside ready to combine their activity with a refreshing stop at the Alford Arms.
