Had a business dinner with colleagues, having eaten at the place several times before. In summary: Positives 1) nice warm atmosphere 2) polite service 3) decent menu, food generally appeared well received by everyone at dinner Negatives 1) slow service. 1hr for starters for example. no-one appeared to notice it was slow, even when asking for it to be checked.... Having heard so much about The Alford Arms, my wife and I booked a table for lunch on my birthday. Very attentive service from the minute we arrived with 'specialist' menus to accomodate my preference for gluten free. The waitress took me through the options and possibilities. Excellent selection of starters and main courses prepared to a very high standard.... More

This is still our favourite place to go, Atmosphere and staff are good but! Sadly few months ago after ordering sausages and mash we got normal sausages instead of famous local free ranged ones. Again today we were bit disappointed after ordering salmon and prawns pie because there was no salmon or prawns in it, just few pieces of white... More

We came here with friends and the place really hasn't changed much since the last time we were there. Unfortunately there were a couple of issues with the food, the bread which came with the soup was dry and was changed. The pork shoulder was lovely sweet meat and with the black pudding mash, tasted very good. The pudding was... More

Being in the area for only 3 months now we are still trying out new dining places every week, and this Friday we finally got a booking at this remote but highly spoken of place, at 9pm. The 'Feel' of the place was nice and raustic straightaway with solid wooden tables and good space between them. We were set at... More

We visited The Alford Arms looking for a delicious Sunday lunch on a cold November afternoon and that's exactly what we got. The service here is unbeatable - quick and friendly from the moment we walked in. The staff accommodated us even though it was very busy. Food was tasty with good vegetarian options - and we especially enjoyed the... More

Excellent food. Large party of 20 work colleagues. All happy! that takes some doing. Really enjoyed the smoked haddock scotch egg starter and pork fillet main. Good wine and good atmosphere. Not cheap, but good food never is. Would go again and would recommend.

I can't add much to the many positive reviews. Food was prepared and served with care and the waiting staff were attentive but never in the way. Lovely location too. Only caution is parking which I understand can be difficult but we had no problem today.

Glad to see the AA up and running again following the enforced refurb. Often go walking around Potten End/Berko so it's nice to have another pub stop on the circuit again. Had sea bass for lunch which was excellent The beer is well kept and very good. Well done.

We have been visiting this pub for years. Called in recently to visit once again, after their recent closure and re-opening. Still a leader in our view, in how a good pub should be managed. The ambience is always good, and the staff are friendly and well tutored in customer care. The food is very good for most part and sometimes... More

Description
A warm and welcoming country dining pub with open fire and muddy boots and dog friendly. People often describe the Alford as a gastro-pub, but we're not really comfortable with that tag. The term sounds too restauranty and cheffy. We've always wanted the Alford to be a great pub, where you just happen to be able to get great food. So tables in the dining room are available to book, but there's also the bar for drinkers with tables available on a first come, first served basis. The seasonal menu and daily specials balance originality with more traditional fare and we are firm believers in using local produce wherever possible. Hanging baskets and window boxes adorn the terrace and provide an alfresco dining area. Alongside is the village green and historic Ashridge Estate is right on our doorstep. Ramblers, dog walkers, bluebell admirers, mushroom foragers and cyclists regularly emerge from the surrounding countryside ready to combine their activity with a refreshing stop at the Alford Arms.
