Japan Itinerary Help

Hello wise tripadvisor friends. My mom and I are traveling to Japan for the first time in September. Here is our plan:

Sept 10 - Arrive @ Narita around 5pm local time. Active 7 day JR pass and train to Shinjuku.

Sept 11 - Shinjuku

Sept 12 - Central Tokyo then take a train to Kyoto.

Sept 13 - Kyoto

Sept 14 - Nara day trip from Kyoto

Sept 15 - Spend the day in Kyoto then take a train to Tokyo (Shinjuku).

Sept 16 - Mt. Fuji or Kamakura day trip (leaning toward Kamakura)

Sept 17 - Akihabara & Asakusa

Sept 18 - Shibuya/Harajuku & Ginza

Sept 19 - Flight from Haneda

Do you think we should skip Kyoto in favor of spending those days solely in Nara? Are there any major items you feel like we're missing or just logistically would be better?

Thanks in advance!

I think your current plan to go to Kyoto and have a day trip to Nara is a good one. There is lots to do and see in Kyoto and it's worth spending time there.

I agree with Hiromi K to skip Kamakura when you go to Kyoto and Nara where there are more precious heritages than in Kamakura. You have better at least spend 2 and a half day for Kyoto plus a half day in Nara.

Sept 11 - Shinjuku: or if you stay in Shinjuku later, why not stay in other places such as Odaiba.

Sept 12 - Central Tokyo then take a train to Kyoto.

Sept 13 - Kyoto: Sanjusangendo, Kiyomizu-dera, south Higashiyama, Heian Shrine, Gion, Pontocho Kawayuka, etc.

Sept 14 - Nara (a day trip from Kyoto) or Nara(a half day trip from Kyoto) with Fushimi Inari in the evening.

Sept 15 - Kyoto: Knkakuji, Ninnaji, Arashiyama. Then take a train to Tokyo (Shinjuku): Alternatively, when you get the 7 days JR Pass, you take Shinkansen Superexpress Hikari (rather than Nozomi), get off at Mishima, take a bus to Kawaguchiko and stay there.

Sept 16 - Mt. Fuji and come back to Shinjuku.

Sept 17 - Akihabara & Asakusa

Sept 18 - Shibuya/Harajuku & Shinjuku.

Sept 19 - Flight from Haneda

One of our favorite things to do in Kyoto was the Arashiyama monkey park. We LOVED it. We walked from the Bamboo forest down a hill to the river, walked along the river, stopped at a restaurant on the river for an ice cream parfait (my favorite parfait during our trip) and then walked uphill to the monkey park. Highly recommend.
