Good place to stay in Langkawi

Hi,

Where in Langkawi is it possible to combine nice jet and jelly-free swimming at the beach with lovely evening walk and plenty of restaurants to choose from?

Many thanks in advance

Hi

Look at hotels in Pantai Tengah such as Frangipani, Holiday Villa or Ambong-Ambong. Alternatively The Danna may be suitable

Cannot promise there will be no jelly fish though...!

Thank you very much, Steady, for your response. The jelly fish business concerns me a lot, though. We've been many times to Phuket and always swam in the sea, because we are not big fans of the pools. Apart from occasional sea lices and few sightings of jelly fish we did not have any problems with the creatures.

Is jelly fish more serious issue in Langkawi then in Phuket? Where are they less likely to appear: in Cenang or Tengah beaches? We are hoping to go to Langkawi close to Christmas and stay there for a fortnight.

Your comments would be much appreciated.

There are jelly fish in all the seas and oceans of the world and because we humans seem to be killing off all the sea turtles who feed on the jelly fish, then their numbers are growing...!

There are less likely to be any in Pantai Tengah as it is a quieter area than Pantai Cenang so there is not as much sewage going into the sea.

Phuket and the Thai islands are not that far from Langkawi and the seas around Langkawi are not teeming with jelly fish anyway. You are Australian so you can buy a stinger suit before you travel and wear it when you go in the sea if you are at all worried.

Christmas is a very busy time on the island so you will need to book as soon as you can.

They call you Destination Expert for Langkawi for a reason. Thanks a lot, Steady!

May I exploit your expertise once more? Speaking of Pantai Tengah I am spooked by the frequent references to undercurrent and sudden rips prevalent over there. We are not big swimmers and don't venture more than 50 m offshore.

Hi

There can be quite a strong rip tide at Pantai Tengah especially down by the rocks, so you will need to watch out for it otherwise all is good.

Tengah seems like a good fit for the things you like to do. as well as the larger hotels beachfront, there are a huge number of smaller, more homely places to stay on the inland side of the road. the road is not too busy, and is easy to cross compared to some.

La Pari-Pari is a nice and friendly little resort, with a little pool and an on-site restarant which is popular [Fat Cupid]. it is well-placed for both morning and evening walks. this is just one example: if you search 'nearby', many more options will come up.

Although the existing beachfront hotels are very nice, they can be expensive around Christmas, and most have COMPULSORY Christmas and New Year events which cost a lot. Also, there is a huge amount of building work going on, and i don't know the proposed completion dates.

being realistic about the sea - if you survived Phuket, Langkawi is similar. Sea-lice are around, and there are certainly sea-jellies. But I personally saw more in Phuket. A stinger suit is a good idea, or a long-sleeved rash vest and running tights. no need to feel silly: local people swim fully clothed, and many tourists cover up in the water too. being covered up allows you more safe time in the sun too.

There are rips: do yourselves a favour and watch some of the excellent [australian] videos on the subject to learn how to recognise and deal with them. no need to be scared, just be aware. there are accidents from time to time, just as at any beach, but most victims tend to be young and male, indicating maybe that risky behaviour is involved. please do not swim in the sea after dark.

lastly - car hire is cheap, as is fuel, and driving is easy if you don't rush at it. there are better places to stay, if you forgo the 'walk to restaurants' part of your question, and use taxis, uber, grab or a hire car instead.

Thanks a lot for the top- notch info.

Just a quick question if possible: landing in one of those lovely and homely resorts in Tengah a la La Pari-Pari, do they provide sunbeds and umbrellas or is it possible to hire them on the beach like in Phuket (Patong)? How long does it take with a nice evening walk to reach hustles and bustles of Cenang if we wish to.

Cheers

Hi

You can hire sunbeds and umbrellas on the beach. Not sure of the price but will be heading that way shortly so will have a look.

It will probably be around a 15 to 20 min stroll into Pantai Cenang or 10RM each way for a taxi.
