Ski resort on 30/31 December 2017

Hi, I'm trying to book ski resort for 30/31 December 2017 near Yuzawa and found out many places have sold out already or not available on that particular day. But the 2017/18 ski open dates have just announced. Can anyone confirm its really that popular? Thanks

There are a few onsen hotels/ryokans in Yuzawa onsen on those dates searching via local booking websites, though rates are higher than normal.

Try Rakuten and Jalan on their English pages. These are two big local booking agents.

I think it's better to book your long distance JR Limited Express train in advance during the crazy New Year Holidays from Dec. 29 to Jan. 3, when many Japanese return to their home town to cerebrate the New Year with their parents, relatives or old friends. Many people start their job from Jan. 4, so return to Tokyo on Jan. 2 or 3. Many long distance JR trains are thus crowded during these holidays. We Japanese can book any long distance JR in advance online or at any JR stations from exactly 10am one month before, but you foreign visitors are allowed to book online similarly online in advance ONLY the trains run by the JR East. Look at this site carefully.

Therefore, you cannot book the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto which is run by the JR Tokai (JR Central in English), but you can book the Joetsu Shinkansen from Tokyo to Yuzawa, or Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo to Nozawa (Iiyama Station), which are run by the JR East.

Every year on Dec. 29, we see on National News the pictures of the non-reserved seats cars in Tokaido Shinkansen from Tokyo to the west, PACKED with people, yes PACKED like sardines so that they cannot even go to the toilets in the train FOR HOURS, which is CRAZY!!

Thanks. The public holiday explains the sold out situation. I may need to alter the days to yuzawa to avoid the crowd.

Yes, it's better to come after Jan. 4. when few Japanese travel.

Probably not sold out already but prices are much higher over the New Year Period so most hotels will block these dates out. If you contact them directly you might find they have availability...

IMO - Yes, really sold out - super popular and busiest time of the year. Most accommodation was booked months ago when the ski packages went on sale and the six-month booking window opened up.
