Local bus will be around $ 3.00 per person even less...a lot of buses...running to San Jose from Santa Ana..maybe one way by taxi the other by public bus!
They run about every 15 minutes...two choices by Escazu that is the old way...or by the new road...27th,,,

We want to stay in Santa Ana for 4 weeks whilst we work in San Jose at the Hospital Nacional de Ninos. We have been looking into getting the bus daily to and from hospital, however we are slightly concerned about Coca Cola Bus Station as we have heard it is really dangerous for toursits and so wouldnt want to be going there twice a day for four weeks!
Will the bus to San Jose terminate here, or is there any other way around it?
I don't think you really need worry about the Coca Cola station. Most of the problem there is petty theft and pickpocketing. So as long as you are careful with your "stuff," you shouldn't have a problem. I'm assuming you will have some kind of daypack? Just keep it with you and don't put anything in any kind of overhead bin. Maybe put your cash and cards and passport in a money belt. Wear your pack in front so no one can get behind you and take stuff out. You will be fine.
Another possibility is to get off the bus somewhere before the Coca Cola station and flag down a taxi.
