How much do taxi cabs charge in Costa Rica?

Just wondering, how much per mile or kilometer do taxis charge there?

What should an 8 mile trip from airport to hotel cost?

And is it customary to tip taxi drivers and food servers there?

Plan on a little more than $! US per kilometer, less than $15. No need tip unless you feel they went above and beyond in customer service.

The official taxi rate:

Airport taxis: 865 colones first kilometer, 755 colones thereafter

Other taxis: 595 per kilometer

There is a proposal to raise these fares by 10 colones which will probably pass.

Note that the official airport taxis are orange (and very professional!) and the other licensed taxis are red with a yellow triangle on the door. Make sure the driver uses the meter.

Tipping is not the usual thing - but I almost always tip something. Usually a bit of change. But if a taxi driver has been very helpful -- for instance, waiting with you at the entrance to your hotel at night to make sure you get in OK, then tip more.

I think that by law restaurant bills automatically include a 10% gratuity/tip/service charge. If your server has gone above and beyond, then I'd give them a bit more. Give directly to the server - don't leave it on the table.

For your server, tip directly if their service has been good as the 10% doesn't necessarily reach them even if it should. Hattie and Sodomojo spot on with the other details.
