Dog friendly hikes

We’ll be visiting the Zion National Park area mid May and I’m bringing my dog. Any recommendations for hikes/trails that are pup friendly?

Thanks!

The Parus Trail is the ONLY place inside the park where your dog will be allowed. The park is not dog friendly. Consider boarding, or leaving the pooch at home.

You’ll find this to be the case at most of the parks in the Southwest.

Yes, Parus trail only in Zion. A flat 2 mile route beginning at the park main visitor center.

Near Zion, in Rockville, is a place called Doggy Dude Ranch. You can board your dog there is space allows.

Outside of NPS aprks and rec areas, you can walk your dog on BLM and USDA lands.

Having a dog with you will dramatically impact a visit to any national park. Actually, Zion's access of the Parus Trail to dogs is better than most parks. Most Utah state parks do permit dogs. Having a dog in the desert is not the greatest idea. If you do it, keep an eye out as dog-rattlesnake encounters are an issue.

That said, we often visit Moab with our granddaughter and her pug. We've found plenty of trails outside the parks and the little pug has done just fine. Consider heat seriously as it can sneak up on your pet.

Have fun.

If you have time there take Kolob Terrace Rd. It weaves in and out of the park and has amazing views and the whole area is dog friendly. There is also an off leash dog area in the town park of Springdale. Walk past the restrooms and cross the river and its all an off leash area. We have used Doggy Dude Ranch twice and love it there. Were supposed to use it again last year and our dog was bitten by a rattlesnake and we had to cancel. The woman owner called me a few days later to see how he was doing. Fortunately he survived but we kept him with us instead of leaving him there and that is when we discovered Kolob Terrace Rd.

Also Kolob Canyon has a very nice dog friendly walk that is a mile total. You have to take interstate 15 to reach that but not a far drive and very scenic.

Last time I saw a rattlesnake over 5 feet in length was in the Kolob section of the park, right on the road.

Parus trail is the only trail in Zion NP that allows a pet (on a leash) to accompany you. Kolob Canyons is part of Zion, and will not allow any pet on a trail. Pets are not allowed in the wilderness areas You can take your pet along the open public roadways, and take your pet in parking areas.

So opportunities to bring your dog are limited. Then you have to ask yourself---will we leave the dog in your room while you do other things? Or will you limit what you do in order to be with your dog? Where are you staying? Are they okay with dogs? Do you want to bring your dog along, then board it somewhere? Some places just aren't good places to bring a dog to.

Call the Doggy Dude Ranch before coming, they are taking dogs on a very limited basis. We take our dogs to the Springdale Park on a frequent basis, they love the river and being able to run.

Our Border Collie has taken Rattlesnake Avoidance training, last year we were hiking when she acted strange and ran a distance away, we didn't see a snake but that's what she was trained to do. Impressive! Both our dogs have been vaccinated.

None of this are in Zion, but are hikes in the area around Zion.

Dogs are allowed on the Chuckwalla and associated trails in St. George.

They are also allowed on the Red Cliffs preserve trails with a leash: http://www.redcliffsdesertreserve.com/trail.

I think they are allowed on the Hurricane Rim trails.
