Is the water safe to drink?

We're arriving on Saturday and staying in a beautiful villa. They have advised us to buy bottled water. Is that really necessary? I hate the thought of all those disposable bottles.

Thanks...can't wait!

It is hard to comment on this without knowing what villa you speak of on Tortola and then knowing the source of the villa's water.

Many villa's pull their water via a rain/gutter/cistern process. Some villa's get their water via a water treatment facility.

We have a villa on Jost and gather rainwater into a cistern. We drink water from 1 gallon jugs that we purchase at a water treatment machine or the store.

I believe this is more a question of personal comfort and what you are comfortable with.

In 34 years we have not had a problem with drinking the water in the BVI.....but, we are not staying in a villa, we are on board a sailing vessel, and provision with plenty of bottled water, both small bottles and gallons bottles. We also have lots of juices, milk, and drink mixes for Erica. and Rum and beer.

IN our two weeks, we visit many, many of the islands and many different anchorages, and even ashore we have never had a problem. Yes, we have fresh water in the boat tanks, and use it for showers, brushing our teeth, making coffee in the morning, washing dishes etc. We also spend a couple of days or so, at the marina area hotel prior to departing the docks. No problem for us, with water.

But for drinking, hydration, and mixing with rum, we use the bottled water. Just tastes better than boat water. Never had a problem with food or water or getting ill in the BVI. Mexico is a whole other story.

I agree with the other posters. Do what makes you feel comfortable and allows you to fully cast of the stress of the mainland, and fully enjoy your BVI Time.

Just us, we drop the steel curtain on the mainland, TV, FOX, CNN, computers, Ipods, and electronic devices, except for navigational GPS, and a boat provided cell phone for dinner reservations or emergencies. .

We cannot fix the planet or capitol hill, but we can control us, and our mission is to have a marvelous BVI vacation, sailing, snorkeling, beaching it, hiking, and with a fair amount of good ol party down time.. Our BVI time, begins when we walk out the door and head for LAX .. Yahoooo !

ON our way in about two weeks.

You all have a grand and wonderful BVI adventure .

Short answer - I would heed the advice of the owners, and perhaps you can buy larger containers for less of an impact on the environment, it's great that you are thinking about that! You can always try the tap water when you arrive too.

Umm, if they say not to drink it it's probably because they don't treat the cistern water. If it's not treated, don't "try" it--the point is to not become ill. Definitely trust your hosts!

Thanks all! We leave on the red eye tonight, can't wait! We will purchase gallons of water and bring our own water bottles to refill from those. The villa manager has said that it's ok to use the water to brush our teeth and make ice. We'll go with that!

Tortola, here we come! Yay!!!

Yes if the owners are recommending you don't drink the water for health reasons definitely do not try it. If it's just for the taste that's up to you...

Enjoy your time on Tortola!
