Ferry Terminal Transfers

Hi there, we will be taking a ferry from VG, land in Tortola and need to get a cab to West End to catch another ferry to STJ. Are taxi's readily available when we land in Road Town?

Also, we are planning to take the 1000 VG ferry and hope to make the 1215 ferry in West End to STJ. Does that schedule seem doable.

Thank you in advance for your help!

You can make that no problem. Taxi drivers will be there ready for you. It's about 15-20 minutes to get to West End. You might even have time to grab a drink at Fish and Lime.

Thanks so much, appreciated!!

Forgot to ask, should we buy our tickets in advance or is it normal to buy on the day of passage? We have never used the passenger ferry system in the VI's, only the STJ car barge.

Well it depends....the Tortola ferry to VG (and back) definitely buy round trip. They are the only company that ferries between and you will save about $10 per ticket. You will be given laminated vouchers and they are good for any day, any ferry. So when you leave VG you will already have your tickets. The ferry from West End to STJ you just buy at the counter. You can use CC for this as well as the departure tax (at a separate window). PLease keep in mind that that taxi from Tortola to West End could be expensive (as it seems all taxis are). They hit us almost $50 for a family of four.

Also, please note that the ferry out of STJ to Charlotte Amalie (if you take this one) is CASH only and that ferry will leave when it is full! For us, that was 20 minutes before scheduled departure. So don't miss it!

We will be arriving Sat in STT and going to VG without stopping on Tortola, so do not need r/t. Do you recommend hitting the ferry dock that afternoon when we arrive to get our ticket from VG to Tortola to secure a spot?

We are planning to take the regular passenger ferry from STJ to STT as we will be going in low season and the CA ferry isn't the most reliable.

We pretty much pay cash for everything when there. That was an expensive cab fare!

Thanks for all the tips!

Yes taxi fare is $12pp to WE from the Road Town ferry, 1/2 fare for kids up to 10 yrs.

Are you ferrying from west end to Red Hook via STJ? Or did I misunderstand?

Thanks, blue....we will ferry from VG to Road Town, taxi to West End, then ferry to STJ.

Just wondering since we don't need r/t, if I should buy my VG-RT ferry ticket when we land in VG a few days earlier?

You don't need to get your return tickets that far in advance. I made a habit of stopping at the ferry dock the day before and talking to people and asking if there were any schedule changes i needed to know about. You will be fine. The ferry from VG to Tortola is a pretty sure bet as folks rely on it to get back and forth to work.
