Weather Conditions

We will be arriving next Thursday - May 18. Looking at the forecast, big rain chances for our entire stay. Are the showers quick in passing or all day? Looking at the associated UV index, it's either 8 of 10 or higher which leads me to believe the showers pass quickly. Should I be worried?

I tend to like this site for my weather in BVIs https:/…ext and ound this to be very accurate on our last trip. Rains are usually passing, followed by blue sky. Often, it can be raining on one part of the island or islands, and bright sunshine on the other...when it calls for cloudy days, be thankful, the sun will beat you down. We got our best color on cloudy days because we forgot to keep applying the sunscreen, and the clouds weren't the dark grey ominous clouds like we are used to, more a spatter of grey, rain, sun....enjoy your trip.

Thanks! We have regular visitors to Key West and it's similar there - showers pass real quick unless there's a disturbance.

Paul,

We will be sailing a 36 foot sloop beginning on the 17th of may. We have to work with what mother nature brings us,

I am looking at the winds, and have changed our itineray slightly to have a little more protection from the seas and the winds. We were going to sail the first day up to Cooper Is., but it is going to be a bit more open and rolly, so, we will head into the deep end Bight on Norman, be more sheltered, and party down on the Willy T. Then catch Cooper at the sunny end of our vacation, for our last day. .

The rain does look like OCCASIONAL rain, which should not be too much of a problem. Chances range for 60% down to 40 % and after a few days, lots of sunshine. Ir also looks like sun and clouds....and likely at 40% chance, mostly sunshine or all sunshine.

We lived on Kauai Island, HI, for nearly 10 years, and the weather reports looked about the same as you experienced in the keys.....rain all year long. Yep, some days , we would have passing trade wind showers, and as you say, usually not a problem unless a full bore low pressure frontal system was rolling in.

We use only one carry on, and each of us has one of those patagonia style light hoodie rain jackets that fold up nicely into the hood., and take up little room. Not only for a rain shower, but when going to windward, taking on salt spray over the bow. Probably will be wearing board shorts, and a tank top most of the time.

Also, we have sailed the BVI in may for 30 plus years , and a great part of the Caribbean, and south pacific, and sometimes we had a strong rain situation, for one day out of the 2 weeks, and then the next morning, warm wx, overcast and good winds into the 20;s for super reefed down sailing. Then it would start clearing out with most of the 2 weeks sunny with moderate sailing winds, and calm anchorages.

You have the proper attitude. We both have selected the time of year to visit the BVI, and cannot change the weather, so no worries, we just make the best of what king neptune has dealt us. And for us, we have to include the safety and the comfort of the selected anchorage. Works out just fine for good BVI time.

.

Thanks Dennis. We can only control our attitude, right? Rain jackets will be packed and if we have to use them so be it. We are just excited for our first trip to BVI.
