OK - you have not said where the house is - which will totally control how many insects you have. Have you rented an entire house in NYC? And if so, where? (It's not in Manhattan, but it may be an hour or more from Manhattan by public transit. Or you may mean a completely different city).

And yes, in NYC we do have mosquitos. We also have screens on all the windows so they won;t be inside the house. How many are outside will depend largely on how close you are to any body of water. Typically the city sprays for mosquitos every summer - but if sitting outside at night in a backyard you will still need insect repellant.

(We live on the 4th floor of an apartment house and the mosquitos don't seem to get this high - but we are not near (within a few blocks) of any bodies of water. But still all of the windows come with screens.

nyt2016 - the OP is asking about the Finger Lakes not NYC.

OP - there are mosquitos in the Finger Lakes (as there are in many places in summer). If conditions in the region have been especially wet due to rain, you could expect more (but there is no way to predict that).

Take the normal precautions (insect repellent, citronella candles, etc.) and enjoy your stay,

I think that your concern about mosquitoes is unwarranted. Mosquito borne illnesses are extremely rare in upstate NY and unless you're staying next to a swamp they shouldn't really be an issue. As rjr0810 indicated, you should just take the usual precautions. Mosquito repellent and a few citronella torches around the fire pit or candles on the picnic tables should suffice as the mosquitoes are most active at dusk. At that time of the year, deer flies and horse flies are much more of a nuisance IMHO, but again insect repellent will protect you from them. You can also purchase hats/clothing that are insect repellent. My husband has a floppy hat that he wears when he's mowing at that time of the year and it works wonders. He's had it for several years now and it still works well.
