3 full days in the park

Hi all - getting my itinerary moving here finally!

We booked 4 nights (3 days) in the lodgings in the park. We have 2 nights in a bungalow, 1 in the lodge and 1 in the longhouse…. The bungalow was already full for 2 of the nights we wanted. We are going in August!

After all the reviews I read we thought we must spend 3 full days here. We will be in Malaysia for almost 6 weeks.

Has anyone stayed in the actual park lodgings? And tours recommended? They sent me a list of so many available we would need a week to do them all so now i have to choose!

Appreciate any advice - thanks - jacqui.

You should take both the show cave tours, and book in advance since you plan to visit during high season. Also do the canopy walk and the night walk. You need to be reasonably fit for the adventure caves and to bring your own torch. You can also do several walks on your own, but need to register at the park HQ for some of them.

The garden bungalows are very nice and comfortable, and the food at the cafe is tasty and inexpensive. Bring your own water bottle or flask, there are several places in the park where you can fill it with filtered water.

We stayed in longhouse rooms in 2018, and they were perfectly ok. Nothing luxurious, but perfectly decent. You can get meals at the park cafe, and they are reasonably priced and decent quality. There's also a couple of places just outside the park entrance you can eat at for a change, and if you want to lash out, there's the Marriot.

As for tours, definitely do the show caves, and the bat exodus - which can be combined with the Deer Cave tour if you do it at the right time. We did the canopy walk, which I thought was fairly unremarkable. Also walked to a small waterfall where we went for a swim, which was nice.

We spent 2 nights there, and one night at Camp 5 as we walked out via the Headhunters' trail.

Great tips - thank you both. Do you recall how soon in advance it’s needed to book the tours? I will try to message the park - they are pretty good at returning email but I think some things are getting lost in translation 😂 we wanted to book the bungalow for all 4 nights I can’t believe they are booked so far in advance. Hope it won’t be too much of a pain moving rooms twice.

We will be flying from Kuching and to Kota Kinabalu at the end. Which airlines did you guys use to get in? The lodge says they don’t provide transport but there is plenty at the airport… are there lots of cabs or should we try ‘grab?’

Thanks!

There is only one airline flying to Mulu, MASwings. No taxi or Grab, it's a tiny village. You can ask a local to drive you to the bridge near the park entrance. If you don't have much luggage, you can walk from the airport to the park entrance in about half an hour.

You could contact Grace Chua in Mulu for transportation. She runs a small cafe from her home near the bridge. Phone 011 3559 7396, email chuameelian@gmail.com.

I can't remember exactly what transport there is from the airport to the park. Definitely not taxis or Grab. But I don't recall it being any problem. I suspect it was just a few locals with their trucks offering to take people and luggage to the park for a few ringgits.

Hi,

FYI, Maswings is the only airline operating flights to Mulu from Kuching, Miri, and Kota Kinabalu. As for the transport from Mulu Airport to Mulu Park, we advise visitors to check with the locals at the airport upon arrival as normally for every flight arrival there will always be a transport service run by those locals offering transfer to the park or even homestays.
