Is Geres a nice base for exploring the National Park?

Me and my boyfriend are looking to visit the National peneda de geres in July, but we don't drive. Geres looks like a lovely small town, and we'd like to stay there - but would it be easy to walk into the National Park from there? We are keen to get out into the Park away from the town and other people (after seven days in the cities!).

We are happy with 5-9hr hikes, and happy to get a taxi out somewhere and walk back (money is not a big issue - this is our one big holiday for the year), the main thing is that we don't want to end up accidentally going somewhere really busy.

If anyone could help that would be great.

Great, PR3/ PR5 that's exactly what I was looking for, two 9km waymarked trails from Geres with an English translation at the side of each route. Thanks.

Hi scousemouse, without a car there are a couple of possible walks. But, if you are prepared to chat to the people in the park centre, or the village, and happy to sit in the back of a truck, it's possible to get a lift to the border. Then it's around 12-15 km back to the village. With a picnic etc., that's easily done. Make it a full day trip and you can wander up the sides of the hills, along rivers, through forests, and get back for a nice evening.

It's a lot easier than it sounds.

Cheers

Thanks, lots of useful information, we were offered (and accepted) a lift in the scoop of a tractor last year while walking! We have now booked our accommodation in the park.
