Transfer at Edmonton airport - what should I expect ?

I'm going to be flying in to Edmonton from Gatwick with Westjet and then bouncing out to Kelowna about 4 hrs later.

What should I expect to happen at the airport?

Will I have to claim my hold baggage and then check it in again?

Will I go through customs at Edmonton or Kelowna?

If I have 4 hrs from landing to departure, how much of this is usable/waiting time?

and what's Edmonton airport like - can I expect shops, somewhere to eat?

any help much appreciated as ever

Like every major airport in the world, YEG has a website that provides excellent info on what services and amenities are available.

http://flyeia.com/

You will go through Canada Customs & Immigration on your arrival in Edmonton - that is your first port of entry.

Assuming you are flying WJ to Kelowna, you can check with them to see if your bags will be checked through.

Edmonton is a newish airport, and as per the website - plenty of places to eat and drink. That shouldn't be a problem.

I'm not sure what the International -> Domestic connections system is like but it generally goes like this

1) Canadian Immigration

2) collect bags (which if you are on WestJet for both flights will probably have been tagged through to Kelowna - but you still have to collect them for Customs purposes **)

3) Canadian Customs - you hand over your arrival form and walk though. Unless there is an issue then the Customs officer will call you over for a chat and a little search (unlikely)

4) Deposit your bags at the dedicated Westjet counter/baggage belt

5) proceed to your departure gate.

** at some of the bigger Canadian airports you don't have to physically collect your bags, but EIA doesn't seem to be one of these. So I am assuming this is the procedure still. The website is not clear on this.

4 hours is a reasonable amount of time if your flight from LGW is on time, and the CBSA is well staffed. You won't be rushed, but will still have time for some refreshment and a walk around.

Once you clear customs, you'll be in the baggage area downstairs. Walk past some of the carousels, a convenience store and your 1st Tim Horton's to an escalator that goes up to the departure level, right near the security line. My recommendation would be to clear security almost right away since it is a bit more interesting when you get through.
