Currency Exchange

We will be spending about eight days in Canada with our first night in Winnipeg. We are looking for suggestions on places to exchange US dollars to Canadian dollars. We will be charging gas, hotel and most meals, but obviously will need some cash. Should we exchange at the entry point or find a place in Winnipeg? Thank you for your help.

Best to find an ATM and use a bank card (not a credit card) to get cash. The ATM should be the ones attached to a bank to keep the fees lower and not the grey market ones in convenience stores.

I agree, your best bet is to go straight to an ATM and use that to get Canadian cash, no need to go to any kind of currency exchanger or bank.

You might just check with your bank and see if you have to alert them to our of USA travel or not. Most have fraud alert in place now and do not need you to let them know in advance, but it is always worth checking. Same with credit cards.

Also, best to take out the max amount each time to avoid bank charges for frequent withdrawals.

Have a great time.

J-W, Another option is to have your local bank order in some Canadian currency for you. That way you'll have it when you arrive in Winnipeg and won't have to search out an ATM. Most Canadian banks routinely have U.S. cash on hand, but I don't know if U.S. ones (might depend how close to the border you are) have Canadian.

i appreciate all of the suggestions. We will figure it out. We have traveled many times outside of the country, including Canada. Just wondered what was the best thing for us to do. We usually take our passports and go to a bank.
