Suggestions for vacation with kids, grandkids

Hi we are planning to bring our kids, spouses and grandchildren for a 4-day weekend in Winnipeg in Aug 2018. Kids are 2, 7, 10, 11, 14 and 18. Do you have any suggestions about where to stay and what to do? Thank you!

You can start your research by checking the Top Questions, and under the info tabs at top of this page - Hotels, Things to Do etc.

You can also have a good look at the very excellent Winnipeg tourism website:

https://www.tourismwinnipeg.com/

Also note the weekend of August 4th - 6th is a long holiday weekend in Manitoba -the Monday is Terry Fox day.

As mentioned in a previous reply, https://www.tourismwinnipeg.com/ is definitely where you want to start looking for suggestions of accommodations and things to see & do in Winnipeg!

We can also mail you a few tourism brochures to help you prepare your visit and help you to discover what our city has to offer.

Don't hesitate to reach out to Sarah Ferrari at sarahf@tourismwinnipeg.com to request free brochures and get more information.

Folkrama is on from August 05 to 18 2017. Here the link to it. https://www.folklorama.ca/

There are two area in Winnipeg that have the most of the hotel in Winnipeg.

Downtown area : Delta , Humphry Inn & suites, Fairmont etc. It has Forks the Children Museum, Exchange Distinct etc. The area is very walkable. And has tons of restaurants

Airport are: has the Comfort Inn Courtyard, Four Points by Sheraton. It is a more car orientated.

Hi there, if the weather is nice, you might consider driving up to Gimili or Grand Beach for the day. It would be a lot of fun for both adults and kids!

Both of them are just over 1 (75 min) hour north of the city. Fabulous beaches. Gimli is a real town, with a interesting Icelandic history. Shops, restaurants, a pier and of course the beach!

Grand Beach is part of a provincial park. You buy a day pass. There are seasonal restaurants, a board walk, a stunning beach and campgrounds.

They are across the lake from each other!

Enjoy!

Spending time in Gimli is lovely. There’s a lakefront hotel called Lakeview resort. It has an indoor and outdoor pool and is beachfront. The Gimli area has main 2 beach areas, one is right out the door of hotel. Very cute town with shops and restaurants walking distance. Beach volleyball net and play structure on beach. Great place for families! Water sports/jet ski rentals. August long is VERY BUSY but tons of fun as it’s the Icelandic festival. Fireworks, carnival, parade, Viking activities. Gimli is a lot more quiet after that but still awesome. Definitely consider it for a night or two!

As for the city, the holiday inn airport hotel has an indoor pool and big play structure with seating and visiting areas for families to gather. They have kid friendly rooms too so that’s one to consider. It is not far from the Assiniboine park and the zoo with polar bears. It’s right on portage ave so you can get downtown in 15 min (good traffic). Lol

If in city, you need to spend time at the FORKS. And definitely take a water taxi ride or tour. There’s a hotel at the forks called INN at the forks if you want to stay right in the action. Always lots going on there for families. It’s not as kid friendly with pool or water slide but you’d be outside most of the time anyway.

for the younger kids the children's museum is great. there is a nice playground just beside it.

for the older kids there are several escape room places that might be fun.

on Saturdays there is the st Norbert farmers market
