Escorted tour

Can anyone recommend an escorted tour of Montreal. We want to get an overview of the city before striking out on our own.

I've read bad things about Greyline tours.

I'm not looking for a walking tour (too lazy).

Gray Line is the usual but there are other options like a tourist bus on which you can hop in and out at many attractions. Also you can rent a taxi with a chauffeur that is also a licensed guide and the driver of the horse buggies in Old Montreal can provide a lot of very acurate infos on this area.

Personally I just don't like the spiel of the Grey Line drivers.

Unless you are spending only one day in Montreal, I suggest that upon arrival you go to the main Tourist Info Center, located at the north end of Dorchester Square, all of the companies are there plus you will get excellent infos from the ministry's tourist agents. And you will be able to make reservations for the tour of your choice for the same day or next morning.

I also suggest that you familiarize yourself with the other great features of this forum, mainly the list of attractions (with descriptions) and the reviews. Also use maps.google.com and zoom in to get a good grasp of the lay out of the city and tourists cores; Plus you can use a special click to also get the public transportation maps.

I am more for doing Montreal on your own, seeing as it's an easy city to navigate in and it's very safe. But i can understand the wish to have somebody show you around.

Rickb has a great idea. Tourist information centers are staffed with really friendly people and they can tell you about tours happening.

For a mini semblance of a tour you could take a carraige ride in old Montreal and ask the driver to tell you about the sites (this is usual so don't be shy). These drivers know about each building, each street in Old Montreal and they are very friendly too.

May i ask where are you staying?
