Husband would like to go to Golden Bay. But I am thinking kayaking around the sounds? We haven't managed to get any kayaking in our itinerary yet, would this be a good option for a tour from Nelson?

<on the island> - which island is that?

The Sounds are quite a long way from Nelson. If you had 4 days you might be able to fit in both, but with only 3D/2N I would stick with Nelson - plenty of kayaking in Abel Tasman NP.

Given your short time frame you could take SH7 both ways, but at least starting from Pegasus gives you a good 30-40 minutes start over the drive time from Chch - about 5 hr driving. Driving via Kaikoura & Blenheim only adds another 30-40 minutes if you haven't seen that coastline on your way to Pegasus.

Golden bay kayaks do guided and freedom kayak hire from tata beach. Fantastic area to kayak, including arches, seals etc and into wainui bay at high tide. For the abel tasman you can kayak from Marahau. Also kayaking trips from Kaiteriteriteri to split apple rock and beyond. For a day in the abel tasman I recommend a water taxi, kayak, walk package to see the maximum amount and enjoy the park from so many different angles. In nelson cable bay kayaks do a great trip in the marine reserve with caves, arches, seals. Also you can hire paddleboards from moana or kitesurf at tahuna beach and paddle around fifeshire rock. It is very popular and stunning on a day like todays stunning day.

I dont recommend kayaking in kaikoura so much - the seas are pretty rough. Only place I have ever got seasick in a kayak!

I have also kayaked Marlborough sounds. but the problem is there arent alot of bays to go into (private with baches mostly) and its a long way to the head of the bays around peninsulas.

There are no ships in the Abel Tasman to throw up the big wakes there are around Picton.

Thanks so much for the information. The water taxi, walk kayak option where would this be from? Where should we book our accommodation as this sounds like you say a great way to,see the park. Would we see seals on this tour? Is it guided? We would def want a guided kayak tour.
