Seeking hotel on east of Liverpool

Spending last night of trip in Liverpool next month and will be meeting friends in Wavertree / Childwell area east of the city. Just looking for hotel recommendations (4* preferably). We will be coming from Manchester so liked the look of the Village Hotel at the junction of the M62 and M57. Need to head to Holyhead the following day so that might be convenient and avoid going through city. I see there are limited options to cross the Mersey. Open to suggestions. We have our own car. Would staying in the city centre be better ?TIA.

The Childwall Abbey Hotel might suit, it’s an old manor house, or something like, now a hotel but I don’t think it is 4 stars.

Other than that there’s not a lot of choice in Wavertree or Childwall other than a Travelodge on Edge Lane, a Premier Inn not too far away at Roby which is also an old manor house or hall and another Premier Inn a little further away on Queens Drive West Derby.

If you stay in the city centre you will have the cost of parking, which can be free in a hotel such as the Liner or for as little as £5 overnight at Mount Pleasant car park. However, I think your original plan sounds better, and stay further out. I have stayed at other Village hotels and found them fine,

For your onward journey to Holyhead, you have to cross the Mersey and in the Liverpool area that will be £2 whether you go under or over. Probably best to use the "new bridge" at Runcorn/Widnes, called the Mersey Gateway, pay on line by midnight the following day.

If you wanted something cheaper, there is a Premier Inn at Widnes on a small retail/entertainment park.

Premier Inn in Roby is ideal, it's the lodge to an old manor house, has free parking, it's quiet as it is set in parkland with a golf course behind. It's convenient for Childwall and Wavertree just off the M62. I am local and personally I would choose there rather than Village or Childwall Abbey.

I've stayed at 4 of the Village group hotels and always been happy with the rooms and service. It's best to join their loyalty club (Booking Revolution) before booking as you will benefit from free car parking, wi-fi, leisure club and access to their special offers.

Thankyou you all for your very helpful replies. If staying in Premier Inn Roby, what is best route to Holyhead ?

From liverpol, head towards widnes go over the mersey gateway bridge, £2 toll charge, follow the signs once in runcorn for the M56 Chester. Stay on the M56 past Chester until you meet the A55 otherwise known as the North Wales expressway. Follow that all the way to holyhead. It might change to the A5 closer to your destination.

Apart from the bit near widnes it is motorway type roads.

Due to major roadworks at Tarbock island, you have 2 choices, from Roby Premier Inn turn right on the A5080 road you are on. There there are bound to be hold ups approaching the island for access to the Knowsley expressway, OR

Turn left, head a couple of hundred yards down to the M62 roundabout and take the first exit signposted Manchester, M62 to the second junction is signposted St Helens, Warrington and Widnes and take the 4th exit (Watkinson Way) expressway to the Runcorn bridge and signposted M56, there is little difference in time or mileage but it would be quicker than going through the roadworks.

The rest is straightforward as above.

Four comments -

Research how to pay for that Mersey Gateway Bridge toll. It's so easy to forget to pay, and get fined for doing so.

Take care on your speed just as you enter Wales (and this is nothing to do with Wales' 20mph limit). You will have been driving fast on the M56 & A494 in England, then that fast road continues. But - as soon as you cross the border into Wales) - it's got 50mph average speed cameras for what feels like several miles (and 50 feels slow when you have been doing 70 beforehand).

And again it's easy to be caught out by the average speed cameras on the 'fast' coast road near Colwyn Bay area.

You will enjoy the drive, I did most of your route there and back to Anglesey a couple of weeks ago, I always like that drive.

Will the nearby Village Hotel be severely impacted by the roadworks ?

Not to the same extent at the moment but as the work is continuing until the autumn, there is no saying whether that entrance to the island will be affected next month.
