Hotel or B&B? Where should I stay for 2 nights in December?

I will be arriving on December 31 with my 14 year old daughter from London. I am having trouble deciding where to stay for 2 nights.

What is the difference between B & B’s and Hotels cause it looks like the hotels do breakfast too?

I was thinking about the Groves?

I am also doing this on a budget and would like to find a place that is UNDER or around $100.00 US a night. I’m basically just looking for a decent place to sleep and experience the area.

Thanks for your help.

Any establishment offering short-term accommodation can call itself a hotel if it wants to. Any establishment offering short-term accommodations can OFFER a B&B rate if it so desires. I don’t think an existential discussion of the difference between a B&B and a hotel will help you.

The Grove is in your price range and it is in Clifton which is a good area reasonably close to the city centre (I have stayed at B&Bs in nearby Bootham all three times that I have visited York).

Unless it gets bad reviews, I’d say go for it.

I just found the Fountain Court Apartments and staying at the grove exec they look nice and have a kitchen and walking distance to the castle with good reviews.

Any thoughts good or bad?

The Groves hotel is excellent - but doubt they will have any vacancies for New Year's Eve. Suggest you contact them quickly as it is a very popular hotel - always our first choice whilst staying in York.

If you're struggling with availability, try a company like Superbreak (www.superbreak.org) who do live availability.

Superbreak are actually based in York as well, so they ought to have a good idea of the quality of hotels.

They both look fine, but I would also consider other B&B's that have good reviews such as Fossbank Guest House, reasonably priced at GBP 70 for a twin room:
