Best transportation from Southampton to Bath

We will be arriving in Southampton from a cruise on a Tuesday in June. We are then heading to Bath. Would the best transportation option be a train or a bus? Of course, we would like to save money but it is our only day in Bath so we don't want to spend unnecessary time in route. We will be spending the night there. The next day we are taking a Mad Max Tour of the Cotswolds.

Train, Southampton Central station to Bath Spa, bought a month in advance (which ties you a particular train ) these are currently showing at £7.50 (or £26.90 for a flexible "anytime" ticket) per person, the train takes around 90 minutes and passes through some lovely countryside.

The hourly train service is reliable and if you book in advance will include reserved seating. (there are only three carriages). Taxi from the Cruise terminal to Southampton Central station and when you reach Bath, the station is only a short walk to the main centre and the Roman Baths etc.

What the previous 2 posters said.

Cheap tickets are usually available up to 12 weeks in advance, and can be found here: the nearer the time the more expensive the ticket. But miss the train the cheap ticket was for and you pay the walk-up price, so make sure you leave enough time to get from the cruise to the station.

I think you could book a train leaving Southampton Central at about 9am, if you are willing and capable of carrying your luggage off the ship unaided. Most ships dock by 7am as turnaround days are busy and the crew have a lot to do.
