Train or drive: Glasgow to Edinburgh

I'll be driving a rental car from Glasgow airport, down around Strathaven and surrounds for a few days and I'm tossing up between dropping the car back to Glasgow airport then catching train to Edinburgh, or just driving to Edinburgh and dropping off at Waverley station.

It'd be nice to not have to keep dragging 2 large suitcases on/off trains, but I'm also not sure how difficult it would be driving into Edinburgh. We'd be visiting Loch Lomond and then heading across country. Costs for either option are roughly the same.

Aussie driver here, so used to driving on the proper side of the road (haha !), will have manual hire car and comfortable with that too.

What would people suggest? Open to any & all opinions and tips.

Thanks!

Depends where you are returning the Car?

If at GLA then obviously you have saved a one way rental fee (£40-50?)

You then have to catch a Bus to Queen St Station then Train to Edinburgh, that is 20 minutes on the Bus and 50 minutes on the train, total cost per person £21, both train and bus are every 15 minutes.

If you had said Glasgow City Centre to Edinburgh then it would have been a no brainer! Train! Nothing hard about bringing a Suitcase on a train? Platforms are only 6 inches below the carriage floor and doors are automatic and wide!

Edinburgh is a nightmare to drive in, but at least you don’t have to find parking as you are dropping the car off.

Up to you? I have given you the costs.

Can you drop off at Edinburgh airport? Very easy to get into the city from there.

Who are you renting from? Where are you staying in Edinburgh? There might be somewhere easier to drop off the car.

Cost for two to get from GLA to Edinburgh by public transport will be about £35 anyway so cost not really a factor on the one way drop off.

Edinburgh Airport if one way drop off fee reasonable.

Airport is to the west of the city and has easy bus and tram links to the city centre.

Driving into Waverley definitely not a good idea.

Thanks all.

Rental is with Avis and we're staying in an apartment just near Edinburgh Castle.

I'd return the car to Edinburgh airport and take the bus or tram into the city centre. Unless the one way hire fee outweighs the benefits but if you returned it to Glasgow you'd have the bus and train fare to pay to Edinburgh to counteract that cost.

With the advantage of being used to the correct side of the road driving to Edinburgh may be an option. Avis depot in Edinburgh city centre is near Leith Walk but you can get there via Ferry Road without having to face the worst areas for driving - use Google Maps to see the route and Google Street to get an idea of roads you would be on. Take a taxi from Avis depot to accommodation to save dragging heavy/bulky luggage (which you may need from either Waverley Station or Haymarket Station in any case).

If you are a nervous driver or unaccustomed to driving in a city possibly revert to public transport. It's a pity there isn't a direct train link from Glasgow Airport to Edinburgh meaning travellers have to get a bus to Glasgow city centre and transfer to the train to Edinburgh from there. As mentioned if you can drop off at Edinburgh Airport you have the option of getting the tram or bus to the city centre.

If you opt for driving. From outskirts of Edinburgh near the airport there is a large multi-lane roundabout to negotiate (Gogar) but beyond there it's not too bad for your route (generally keep to the left side lane as you will be going to the left beyond here). There is likely to be plenty of traffic, parked vehicles narrowing the driving space, bus lanes, cyclists, roadworks, etc to consider as with many cities. You will know your driving strengths better than us.

Avis don't have a location at Waverley. It is in East London street so quite a distance from the castle. You would likely need a cab from there anyway.

Near the castle is not very specific though as Edinburgh is basically built around the castle. If you were arriving out of peak time then the drive would not be so bad. Take the route via Ferry Road and along Inverlieth Road.

Won't be that much difference in just dropping at the airport and cab or bus into town.

Edit - sorry posts crossed Rantin. ;-)
