Local Guides

I would like to hire a guide to spend the day showing me around Glenboig, Airdrie, Coatbridge and Greenock. I cannot afford the only quote I have been able to find online (40 pounds an hour, minimum four hours). Hoping to find an older resident who would like to show a Canadian with Glenboig roots your area for a lesser price.

I think I saw a post on the Greenock forum recently saying there were local volunteers who met cruise ship passengers and showed them round. Have a look there.

However, the area you are trying to cover is large, and, I have to say, not on the usual tourist routes!

DO you have a special interest in the area, so that others may be able to give better advice on your trip?

Your right Peter there is a volunteer group that meet the Cruise Ships at Greenock and will show you around Inverclyde for a donation, however the OP would have to tie this in with a day a Ship is in and that is around 9am. She has parental ties to the area and I responded on another Post, I suggested on there it could be done by train and that there is not much to see.

Perhaps try another tack, and contact a local history society or these people http://www.lanarkshirefhs.org.uk/index.html to see if they can help you as it is highly unlikely that there will be any professional tour guides in the area.

Thanks everyone for the good hints. I know I can get to the area by train, but once there I don't think I can walk around and between the areas I want to see. I hoped to arrive in Airdrie or one of the towns by train from Edinburgh then meet up with a local who will spend some time with me and then take me back to either the train station or Glasgow.

I will follow up on the suggestions. My connection is that my mother was born in Glenboig, grandfather Greenock and I want to "walk on the land".

Give "Clyde Coast Tourism" http://www.clydecoasttourism.co.uk/ a lookin, they do local tours of the Clyde Area and in particular Greenock. I think they are one of the only tour companies in the town? (local) apart from the tourist group. I was on the Greenock Cut Tour with them and a cruise to see the Inverkip Power Station going down which was some sight.

Definitely worth a lookin

Thank you! This was a great idea. I am currently in touch with someone from the Lanarkshire Family History Society who says they can arrange for me to visit Airdrie, New Monklands and Glenboig. I am so glad you gave me the info.
