Hi is it possible to see both Mt Vesuvius and Herculeum from Naples central in one day by catch the train and bus?

Yes, it is. The easiest way using public transit would be to take the Circuvesuviana train to Ercolano Scavi (either the Naples-Sorrento line or the Naples-Poggiomarino line). From this station you can walk one half mile to the ruins (Herculeneum).

From the piazza in front of the station you can take the Vesuvio Express, a private bus/van service that will drive you to the base of the Grand Cone trail of Vesuvio and back.

Just to add to Elstravels excellent advice. We did this a few days ago and would advise you to climb Vesuvius first as it’s increasingly hard work as the heat builds up throughout the day.
