We were staying in Piazza Bellini and there were 4 army personnel on guard there 24/7. Also noticed them in other areas. Is this the norm for Naples?

It's the norm all over Italy after Nice and the Bataklan.

It is actually an operation that started long before these two acts of terrorism. See https:/…OperationStradeSicure.aspx

But it was renewed and made bigger because of the terrorism acts. Decrees have a date of expiration.

Thanks for your replies we had a great time there and never felt under threat at any time. Lots of reports on here as to how terrible Naples is but we loved it. No different to any other big city.

You will see it in Rome, etc as well - I have seen more of it in both Naples and Rome since the attack in Barcelona but there has long been a presence in certain parts of the cities - security you see as well as security you don't see -

Yup, we saw them all over in Rome and Naples. In fact, in Rome, we had to go through security checks for all the major tourist attractions!
