From Verona to Cinque Terre

We are driving from Verona to Cinque Terre, where we plan to spend 2 days/1 night. We have a day in between and though to stop for one night in Portofino area and visit Portofino and Santa Margherita Ligure. Can you suggest any other alternative for one day on the way between Verona and Cinque Terre, nice city and may be a sandy beach. Is Prtofino/ Santa Margherita Ligure my best option?

Thanks a lot!

Are there any nice sandy beach in the area?

Portofino is not really en route, as going that way takes around two hours longer. Don't let that stop you going there - the Portofino peninsula is beautiful. But check the hotel prices before doing so - this is the most expensive place to stay on the Riviera. Portofino's sandy beach (at Paraggi) is tiny, the beach establishments' prices are also among the highest on the Rivera, and the free beach area is about footpath width. In much of August, Paraggi is virtually impossible unless you have pre-booked a place.

Rather less off route, consider the beautiful Lerici and its neighbouring village of Tellaro. Also very busy in August, but not as bad.

Portovenere is lovely too, but lacks a sandy beach.

Bonassola has a nice sandy beach, with very clear waters and is a pretty town as well (with two beautiful scenic points: Madonna della Punta and Punta del Carlino).

So, where would you say , Andy, is nicer to spend half a day: in Portofino and Santa Margherita Ligure or in Bonassola? Tough choice for me, I like everything in Italy.

Landscape-wise, go for Bonassola (which is also closer if you come from Verona). S.Margherita Ligure has nicer historical buildings (but don't go there for the beach!) Food-wise, they're probably at the same level :-)

Anyway, for half a day I would choose the closer town.. and, while in Bonassola, have a walk to Madonna della Punta
