Northern Italy to French Riviera to Lake Como Route

wife and I are pplanning a two week trip this september and are looking for some suggestions regarding scenic stops along or proposed route. We plan to fly into Milan then rent a car and drive to Lake Como (2-3 days) then drive through mountains to Switzerland (1-2 days) . Then drive down to Nice (Côte d'Azur area)

for 2-3 days . Then driving back to Portofino area (passing through Eze) and staying 2-3 days. Back to Milan for 1-2 days then departing to USA . Any suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated.

Regards, Bill & Peg

If you change your flight into Zurich, you can take the William Tell Express Train which includes a cruise on Lake Lucerne and then back on the train through the famous mountains to Lugano. Pick up a car there for the remainder of your trip to Lake Como. Great sightseeing! Also make sure you visit St. Paul de Vence just outside of Nice and one of my favorite museums Fondation Maeght.

Thank you so much for your reply! We will surely look into these options. We Are now making plans in Nice and have heard of St. Paul de Vence. Our plans are to have a car and use Lake Como as a base for four days. We will then move on to the south of France. We are wondering about stops between those two points. Thanks again so nice to get advice from fellow travelers!

If you do decide to drive, you can take the Simplon Pass which is a spectactualr drive over the Switzerland/Italy border. Last summer we drove from Pisa to Lake Geneva via Florence, Verona and Como. Bellagio on Lake Como is beautiful and this wine cellar/restuarant is a must http://www.cavaturacciolo.it/ - the best food we had on our whole trip. Likewise, Comacina (a well-known restaurant on a small island) is worth a visit http://www.comacina.it/en/island.php. We also enjoyed a glass of rose on the terrace of Villa D'Este which was really wonderful. In Portofino, my parents stayed at the Splendido. We are staying somewhere with a slightly smaller pricetag (!), but certainly worth a glass of wine as I understand the views at sunset are wonderul. We absolutely loved our trip and particarly the parts in Northern Italy. If you had time to squeeze it in, then Verona is also really wonderful.
