You really have too many destinations. Skip at least one, maybe two. You cannot drive a car into most Italian cities. So either you use the trains or you will have to find hotels outside the city centers.

As you are mostly visiting towns, the train would be the best transport option. Renting a car is not practical because of the ZTL restrictions in all towns (even small ones you may just drive through) and lake Como is best seen by boat.

Would skip the Ferrari museum or the vineyard visit - these will take up a lot of time - if you are unwilling to do that, then you’ll need to cut one of the cities.

The cities you intend to visit are connected to each other (excluding Lake Como) by high-speed trains.

Better than using the car.

Yes, ten days isn't enough for that trip, and for a list of major cities, a car is the last thing that you will need. Even seeing Milan/Florence/Venice is going to be more than enough for that time period - and go between them by train!

Forget the car, it's more trouble than anything in Italy unless you are visiting the country side. First you only have 10, does that include day of arrival and day of departure? You barely have enough time for Venice, Florence and Rome. Coming out of Canada then you should book a multicity trip landing in Rome and flying out of Venice as it's almost the same price as a return from the same city. And take the train between cities. If the Ferrari museum is a must then rent a car in Venice and visit the Ferrari museum and return the car in Florence just keeping it 1 day. Still the easiest would be to look for a tour from Florence for a day.

" what is the best option for a train pass? "

There is no train pass worth buying for what you are planning to do. For intercity trains (e.g. Milan to Zurich), the best option to save money is to fix your departure date, and buy the tickets early. For example, projecting to a date in January 2022, the 'low cost' (SMART category ticket) for two persons is €62 (or 31 Euro /person)

For Milan to Venice, all discounted fares seem to have sold out, so only Full fare (BASE ticket) are available, at approx. €49/person. Italo still has some tickets at € 24.90/person

(Please note: these tickets are only priced to the end of the booking period of mid Jan, at this stage. For your own dates, keep checking)

For Milan to lake Como, REgional trains only, no discounts available

When we traveled with our children we could buy a family ticket for the trains which really saved us quite a bit of money. We spent 4 days/nights in Rome, Florence and Venice and traveled by train exclusively. We then took a train to Naples, had pizza there and hired a driver to take us to Positano where we spent 4 days as well (stopped in Pompeii one day ). Our kids were 9 and 12 at that time and we could have spent at least an additional day in all of these places. Hope this helps

Hi Lucie

As I outlined in my post #7, the best option to save money is to fix your dates, and book them as soon as they are available. Post #8 mentioned about a family ticket, without elaborating what kind of ticket it is.

Trenitalia (the State operator), which runs high speed trains (I presume this is what you are after, travelling from Venice to Florence, for example), does NOT have a family ticket for high speed train. You can confirm what I am saying by going directly to their site:

Family offer:

https://www.trenitalia.com/en/offers/famiglia_offer.html

Children free offer: (this one is applicable for high speed trains)

https://www.trenitalia.com/en/offers/bimbi_gratis.html

With all the above offers, you need to do your maths, would the total cost of Bimbi Gratis match the price of advance purchase reservation for 2 adults and 2 chidren, for example?

Using the Trenitalia website above, doing a dummy booking for Dec 27, Venice to Florence, Bimbi Gratis price is 114 Euro total, against a discounted price (Super Economy) of 101 Euro
