Milan vs Florence

Milan vs Florence

We are booking a honeymoon trip to Italy. We are going to Venice and Rome. We are now pondering whether to go to Milan or Florence. Our travel agent said Milan is more of an "industrial" city and there is much more to see in Florence. Does anyone have any input on this? Ages are 27 & 30, if that helps. Thank you for your time.

WHEN are you going?

You might enjoy some time at Lake Garda or Lake Como as a break from the cities for a romantic honeymoon.

I have not been to Milan but people seem to go there for opera, and to see the Last Supper.

Florence is one of "the big 3" for first time Italy visitors.

Florence is something more amazing than Milan, I'd favour it over Milan unless you have time to see both. It's not that Milan is an "industrial town" or that you see only "the last supper" (I am frankly amazed by people who go to Milan just to see that painting, and only because it appears in a stupid book!) but the sheer number of works of art and of amazing churches and palaces you have in Florence is a lot more than in Milan, which by its nature is closer to Mid-european cities like Munich or Vienna and which is also the business centre of Italy. So whiel you shouldn't miss Firenze, you can miss Milan. As for the lakes, I would not recommend them for your first trip to Italy, there's plenty of nice lakes all around the world but there's only one Firenze in the world.

Having been to Milan twice and Florence 3 times I can say that both cities are lovely. But as cla114 states, Florence is that little more magical and more aesthetically beautiful. You can indulge in the many cultural/historical features through galleries and museums, you can avoid them all and just wander through the streets and admire the views or you can mix both aspects on your stay in Florence.

From a logistical point of view, the trip is very straightforward with a 1.5 hour train journey between Rome and Florence and a 2.5 hour train journey between Florence and Venice. If you are able to fly into Rome and out of Venice (or vice versa), this will minimise a return journey between Venice and Rome.

I just returned from Milan and Florence. Florence is more interesting and you will enjoy it more especially if you are on your honeymoon. I would skip Milan.

Another vote for Florence.

There's a lot more to see and do in Florence.

The problem with Milan is that it is one of the main cities in Europe for trade shows and, consequently, is fairly frequently booked out - as in there isn't a hotel room or B&B vacancy to be found anywhere.

If you and/or your SO are heavily involved in the world of high fashion, then Milan might be your cup of tea. You can use your connections to visit some of the couture houses and work rooms. If fashion isn't seriously a primary concern, I'd go the Florence on this trip, and save Milan for another one.
