Stay Near Central Station or Near Duomo?

Hi!

We're a family of three and we'll be arriving in Milan (Linate) from Paris via EasyJet in April 2014. We'll just stay for 2 nights in Milan to see the Duomo and the Last Supper, and as base for a daytrip to the Swiss Alps. We'll then take a train to Venice and stay there for 2 nights.

So our itinerary in Milan might look like this:

1st day:

Paris-Milan ETA 12:25 p.m.

Check-in

Last Supper

Duomo (day and night view for photography)

2nd day:

Daytrip to Swiss Alps

3rd day:

Checkout

Train to Venice

So based on this, what's the best area to stay in at? Near the Central Station or near the Duomo?

Thank you!

It doesn't matter where you stay because you can easily get the metro to anywhere in Milan, the Duomo area is the most expensive but if it's within your budget then you're within walking distance to most of the sights. The Central station area is not the prettiest but is perfectly safe and there's hotels to suit all budgets and it's handy for the train if you're visiting the alps.

Thanks Chrella!

Would you know if it would be cheaper for 3 persons to take a taxi to the train station for the train to Venice instead of taking the Metro from the Duomo station? Thank you!

It has been a few years since we were in Milan but we stayed at the Hotel Spadari a few blocks from the Duomo and subway. If you want to take early morning and late shots of the duomo this is a perfect location. Get out early before the crowds hit the piazza.

As to Milano taxi fares, a few weeks ago we found the fares in the more-or-less central area pretty reasonable. I would expect the premium over Metro for 3 people to be small or nonexistent. And with luggage, I'd personally go by taxi even if it were a bit more expensive.

More importantly (apologies if you already know this), please realize that viewing the Last Supper is by timed ticket that must be booked in advance, well in advance. They're handled for the Church by a private ticketing outfit. You can do it online or by toll-free international phone at a number shown on the official website. Some have reported that tickets were available by phone for dates and times shown online as unavailable. Consider taking the "guided tour" for a few euros extra. If you don't speak Italian, there are a couple of English-language tours every day. Well worth the price, in our opinion, especially because even without the guide, you are allowed only about 15 minutes to view the painting.

One further suggestion: Especially if your family includes a young person, consider visiting the Museum of Science and Technology (or something like that) quite near the church in which the Last Supper is located. This museum has wonderful good-sized models of various ingenious machines designed by Leonardo da Vinci, created from his drawings. Just fascinating for children of all ages, as they say.

thanks for the tips everyone!

I think we've decided to just stay near the Duomo since it seems easier and safer for us to return there late at night.

i'll try to reserve the last supper tickets in January after we've finalized our travel dates. Hopefully, tickets would still be available for April. We'll look into that Da Vinci Museum, hopefully we'll have enough time in Milan to visit that.

Thanks!
