In fact Pisa San Rossore station is about 1 km far from the Tower, while Pisa Centrale is approx. 1.5km. Only regional trains stop at San Rossore, however, so it may not be very practical.

San Rossore is a 5 or 10 minute maximum walk from the tower, but it is on the regional line, the one that goes to Lucca. It isn't well sign posted though, so if you decide to use it come back and I can give you easy directions.

For Leaning Tower Square get a train that stops in Pisa San Rossore Station…

After you exit the train you will walk through the "subway" which is the path underneath the tracks. Once you emerge walk straight outside the gates and make a hard left onto Via Andrea Pisano. Walk straight ahead and in less than 10 minutes you will see and be at the Tower.

This train station is VERY small but quite convenient for getting to the tower. My only advice is to go ahead and have your return ticket with you so all you have to do is stamp it in the little yellow box to validate it when you're ready to go. We didn't have a return ticket, got there just in time for our return train and wound up missing it because we couldn't find the place to buy one. We had to wait an hour for the next train or take a cab (which we did) to Pisa Centrale which was a waste of time and money.

You can buy tickets there from a machine in the waiting room, but it isn't one of the big easy to use ones you get in the major stations it is one of the ones you have to punch the code in for departure and arrival places (big board of codes right there) type of ticket etc.
