Bicycling through the tulips

We will be in Amsterdam from March 27-April 1st. My main objective is tulips and other spring flowers. I think on the 28th (Saturday) we will take public transportation for a day at Keukenhof. I'm thinking on another (hopefully non-rainy) day we will take a bus to a town/village and rent a bike to ride through the tulip fields. My question is from what city/town/village should one start a day bike trip? Leiden? Or is there a better point? Also are there other "hot spots" that you would recommend for flower viewing at that time? -- Harlan

It is not certain there will be tulips in the farm fields then. Keukenhof will probably have flowers already but the 'normal' tulips tend to blossom from mid April onwards. Only a mild winter will bring them up sooner.

For bike rides I guess Lisse is a good starting point.

Riding through the flower fields late March and early April is possible but not sure it will be tulips you see there. Last year the first week of April we had tulips in the field due to an early spring. 2013 we had tulips not before the first week of May. Generally you can expect to see the bright yellow daffodil fields, maybe some purple late crocus fields and may be the beginning of Hyacinths in bloom.

But for now it will be too early to tell. Before mid March there is nothing to say about an early, normal or late spring.

If you are determined to see tulip fields, based on the last 10 years the last 2 weeks of April is your best chance, but you never know what nature is going to do this year.
