I want to hire a road race bike similar to my own (drop handle bar bike) for a number days so that i can cycle around 40 to 50 miles per day most rental shops dont seem to have that style of bike

Aha.

This came up in google: http://www.racefiets-huren.nl/Leiden

If that doesn't work, try googling 'racefiets huren leiden'. We call that a 'racefiets'. It will come up with road race bike rental places outside Leiden, or bike rental places inside Leiden but they may not offer road race bikes... so click around and read up.

Tip: open a website in a Google Chrome browser and it will automatically translate a Dutch website into English for you (if English is the language of your computer). Of course they are simple word-by-word google translations but at least you'll be able to understand the basics. You can even understand the gist of Japanese websites in Google Chrome. :-)

Look here for a simple but great signposting system to create your own scenic routes: en.nederlandfietsland.nl/en/cycling-daytrips

though on a road racer bike some of the paths may be a bit too rough.

The dunes around Noordwijk, Wassenaar etc. are amazing. http://www.pbase.com/cile/image/158648781

Leiden also touches the 'green heart' of Zuid-Holland province, in Google Maps you can clearly see it. For example a ride to the north edge of Zoetermeer would be nice, and cafe Aa-zicht is a great place to stop, overlooking a lake. http://www.pbase.com/cile/image/158648770 (Many cyclists stop there, you won't be the only one in bike pants ;-) but that goes for most cafes, we have loads of bikers in bike pants doing daytrips or holidays.) Skip Zoetermeer itself, very ugly.

Reeuwijkse Plassen is a nice area to bike through as well and Oudewater is a super cute medieval village. http://www.pbase.com/cile/image/158648751

On a good day if you're up for 80 km on one day, you can even make it to Kinderdijk and all its windmills.

Happy riding!

Cecilia

P.S. If renting in The Hague is easier for you: you can see their locations here: www.racefiets-huren.nl/Den-Haag#OnzeLocaties

Click on a pin to see the exact address.
