How do i start my own tour business in greece

Hello People. i am a Greek/Aussie and travel to Greece nearly every year. I wish to start my own tour in Greece. Covering both mainland and islands. What i have in mind is a 15 day max 30 people trip. But where do i begin? How do i register the business, where do i apply for necessary permits and legal obligations? Is there a course of some sort that can give me information about how to operate a succesfull tour business in Greece? Thank you kindly.

Dimitri

I'm almost positive from our discussions with our private tour guide in Naxos that it is very difficult and time consuming to be a certified tour guide. In fact, our driver in Santorini, a lovely informative Swiss emigre, said at several sites she could not enter with us since she was not certified.

We have friends in Italy who have the same problem. However, they lived in Halifax, Canada for a few years so they operate as a Canadian business with Canadian and American tourists booking in Canada. There is also another guy who does food tours of Abbruzzo region of Italy who is booking from Australia where he resides. Neither have to be licensed although they might use a registered guide for certain places.

That said, the guides of Greece are a distinct bunch, among the best educated in Europe. By law, they have to study 2.5 years in a University-level school to get a license to guide. Then they have to pass very strict exams during which they are tested on their knowledge of the entire Greek history, prehistory, archaeology, sites, geography and more. They also have to prove their proficiency in both Greek and at least one other language, the one they will be licensed to guide in. All in all, one could say they’re walking and talking encyclopedias of things Greek.
