Innsbruck vs. Interlaken

We are travelling in Austria and Switzerland in June, with 6-7 days visitng in and between Innsbruck and Interlaken. We are trying to decide how best to divide up that time. We will have a rental car; we like to hike, but are not climbers. We'd like to spend some time at Lake Lucerne. We also are thinking of stopping in Vaduz, just because we think it will be interesting to be in Lichtenstein. Any suggestions?

Tyrol has a lot to see - cost in Austria are also much lower vs. Switzerland:

If you are only interested in hiking, then staying in Innsbruck does not make much sense. It is a city, a small one though, with quite a lot to see and do, but not the ideal place for a holiday aimed at hiking and outdoor activities.

Thank you. We were thinking of using Innsbruck as a base for day hikes. I've been looking at a lot of nearby villages as a different option, but it is so hard to choose just one. We figured that being in the city overnight would offer more options for dinners out, and that we could spen some time seeing the city as well. Are there particular villages that you reocmmend visiting or staying in? I've been looking at Seefeld, Zell am See, Hall in Tirol, Ehrwald and Pitztal.

Well, if that is your plan, then staying in Innsbruck definitely makes sense! Keeping your car though will entail some costs if you stay downtown.

You could do day trips to the nearby Stubai Valley (including Stubai Glacier), Achensee Lake, Zillertal Valley (where you could also go up to Schlegeis Water Reservoir), the Wilder Kaiser Region (Ellmau, Going, Scheffau und Söll) as well as the Seefeld-Garmisch Partenkirchen-Ehrwald area (+ Zugspitze Mountain).

You could even go as far as Füssen and visit Neuschwanstein Castle.

2 beautiful countries to choose from, you can't really go wrong! In fact, our last holiday was a combination of Austria and Switzerland. Switzerland is far more expensive,

I would not choose Interlaken in Switzerland though. Instead look at Grindelwald, a fabulous base for exploring the Jungfrau region and it's great variety of hikes and cable cars, and you can drive your car there. Lauterbrunnen is also car friendly, but tends to get less sun due to the steep cliffs.

I would stay in Seefeld (in Seefeld Village). Its so cute, has everything you want with lots of restaurants et al and great for exploring and hiking. Only half an hour on a very scenic train ride to Innsbruck and no parking problems!

Lots of hotels but Hotel Haymon (3 star) is good, right in town and has parking.
