Fish and Chips is best at Bells in the Market Place (not the cheapest, but definitely the best in the centre).
Durham isn't overly blessed by Indians, but I'd personally go with the Spice Lounge (in the bottom left of the Market Place in the corner - slightly out of sight). They are pretty much all much of a muchness though Rajpooth, Capital, etc.

Hi OldhamSheridan, just came back from Durham. Thank you for your tips. We went to Bells which did not disappoint. It is by far the best fish and chips which we had comapred to London and Canterbury. We had fish and chips the first day evening and today take away at lunch time to eat on the train when leaving Durham. Yesterday night we went to a Lebanese restaurant called Lebaneat. Have checked out on Tripadvisor in advance. The food was tasty, not spicy and would fit also the conservatives. They are similar to Mediterranean cuisine such as Greek and Turkish. Service was very friendly and good. Will recommend this restaurant if one wants a change from Italian, steak, fish and chips or Indian.
