Edinburgh to Durham

Hi,

We are driving from Edinburgh to Durham in mid September. I do not know much about this part of England and would appreciate any advice on a scenic route and anything we shouldn't miss or that we should avoid.

Thanks in advance.

Two main choices, follow the A1 around the coast, places to see Berwick on tweed, Bamburgh Castle and, tide dependent, Lindisfarne.

Or take the A68 through the Scottish Border towns, over the Cheviot Hills and with a chance to have a look at Hadrians Wall around Hexham.

Either is a great drive, personally I go over the hills.

Those are the 2 basic choices with variations depending on what interests you. The third option is via Wooler which allows stops like Rothbury and Cragside.

Avoid the A1 around Newcastle in the rush hour, the Tyne Tunnel (A19) is often quicker although there is a toll to use it.

Just north of the Tyne Tunnel there is Silverlink roundabout which is currently in the middle of a massive rebuilding and delays are expected

I'd take the A68 route and think of stopping around Jedburgh for a leg-stretch.

The prettiest and most scenic route is the A1 down the coast where you can view/visit Holy Island (also known as Lindisfarne, depends on tides), Seahouses, Bamburgh and divert into historic towns of Alnwick and Morpeth.

All the routes are mostly single carriageway with a 60mph speed limit so drive carefully and leave plenty of time to get there.
