Is Beziers a nice place to visit

We are planning a few days away in the next few weeks, and are looking at Beziers. We like walking around towns / cities, exploring and eating local food. We need somewhere with reasonably priced food, drink and transport.

A couple of websites suggest that there is a high crime rate and many places that you should not walk alone at night. Is this just scare-mongering?

Also, we would like a 2-bedroom apartment, where is a nice area to stay?

Many thanks

It is interesting to read that coming from Hobart that you bought in Beziers. I guess it is to escape the southern hemisphere/Tasmanian winter. We will be coming to Tasmania in January to escape the Langedoc-Rousillon winter.

It's essentially scaremongering. Beziers is a down to earth sort of place. Not really touristy but a nice slice of the real Midi. It's setting is lovely as the old town overhangs the river & there is a pleasant stroll to be had from the old bridge up into the heart of the warren-like old town. The locals are just doing their business & being hassled is not likely. Sure, it's not an obviously touristy, pretty French city but it's not unattractive. Yes, people stare a bit but I have found that the French are master starers & have accustomed myself to this. Generally it's just a friendly curiosity. Take a keek at Pezenas if you get the chance for this place really is stunning, just 30 minutes along the road; it retains a real medieval charm which has not been disturbed too much by the tourists. It reminded me a little of a similarly-sized southern town - Uzes, also with bags of charm. Bon Voyage!

Just another vote for Beziers. Ours was a 2 night stay whilst travelling slowly , by train and bus , in the south of France. Its true there isn't a huge amount to see but it's a pleasant enough place to spend a day or two with some nice shopping and restaurants. It seems quite a bit of money is being spent upgrading the roads and pavements around the Halles and shopping areas and some areas are positively up-market with some posh frock shops and eateries.

We did quite a lot of walking and it's fair to say we did come across areas that looked potentially dodgy on the outskirts of the city - but doesn't every town and city have such areas.Just don't go to those areas.

We enjoyed our visit and for slow travellers 2 nights was just right.

Beziers is a great place to visit or to use as a base to visit from - to Narbonne, Caracassonne, Montpelier, Perpignan, Sete, Agde, Pezenas - and of course the neighbouring villages along the Canal Du Midi. One of the best "hubs" for public transport. We've now been a dozen times and just cannot get enough of the place. It has a shabby chic look from historic recessions - but every visit, there have been more improvements. Some fantastic and friendly cafes and restaurants. History in abundance!

Direct TER and occasional Intercitie train which takes about 3 and a half hours. TGV trains with a change.

If you are going to Agde, then make sure you take a train that stops there. Many Intercitie and TGV trains do not stop in Agde. All TER trains do. You do not reserve seats on TER trains.

Just back from 10 days in Beziers. It is a nice place to visit, very quiet at this time of year, and rail connections are very good. There are lots of nice places surrounding Beziers that are worthwhile visiting: Pezenas, Agde, Sete, Perpignan, Carcassonne, Collioure, Banyuls sur Mer and many others to choose from. We found Beziers very quiet in the evening- we think there were only about 6 or 7 restaurantsopen with a couple more on Friday and Saturday evening. The food was good everywhere we had a meal and the local wine was very good and cheap. There are a lot of nice shops , but seem to close early evening.

One piece of advice is to make sure you know how you are getting from the airport to your accommodation. A few taxis might arrive to coincide with flights, but if you have not prebooked a taxi, you have to phone for one to come for you(there is a booklet in the airport which you can take that has a list of taxi numbers in it, but we had to be shown where to get it). Be wary of the Airport taxi transfer service - this is very expensive. Try to use the buses which come to the airport to meet flightsand take you to various places. It is easier to get a taxi from the main bus station of your destination to your accommodation and a lot cheaper. It might be worthwhile considersing staying in Agde or Sete as Agde is only 15 - 20 minutes from the airport whereas Beziers is 35 - 40 minutes.

If I was going back to Languedoc-Rouisson area again, I would seriously consider basing myself in Carcassonne. Again, there are good rail connections with lots of lovely places to visit nearby and the city was livelier. There are also lots of walks in the surrounding area. Although called a city, I would describe it as a town.

We have been living in Beziers for six weeks now and there is much to like about the city. Certainly the city has greatly improved the streets and the local squares. However, Beziers has a significant problem dealing with local drunks (people who drink on the street). They exist in much of the older part of the city, which is also the most charming. We have seen the police occasionally try to address the problem but those same people show up drunk on the streets the next day. We have discussed the problem with neighbours and city officials but nothing is being done. While we have not witnessed pretty crime, people do not ride bicycles in the city for a lack of anyplace safe to lock them up. It is also clear that the problem, that we have witnessed, is not one of immigrants. We have yet to experience immigrants drunk on the streets causing problems.

Interesting feedback from both of you, Jim and Katrina. I would include Marseillan and, certainly, Narbonne on the list of places to visit from Beziers
