Train from Copenhagen to Husum, Germany, daytrip?

Attending a conference and will treat ourselves to a two day stay behind, late in November-- we would like to hop a train to Husum (our ancestors emigrated from Husum in 1600s) for the remains of the day and back to Copenhagen that night. Is this realistic? Will have U.S. passports. Haven't done much solo European travel in the past.

Thank you sooo much for your reply.

You'll have to take them with you. But this is a trip inside the Schengen Area. Thus they are probably not checked.

Husum as a day trip from Copenhagen? Only if you are masochists. You have three tight scheduled train changes and 4 hours 30 minutes in each direction. I mean you can hope all the trains are on time and if you start at 9am, you get there at 1:30pm and could stay for four hours befor having to leave. It's doable but 9 hours of train travel is extremely tough. Including an overnight would be better.

If possible I'd extend your stay there. Husum is rather nice, there are some things to see nearby like the Wadden Sea and you're changing trains at Flensburg and Schleswig which are also fine tourist destinations. Also coming from Husum is one of Germany's most famous authors, Theodor Storm, who wrote a great story taking place in this region https://www.amazon.com/Rider-White-Horse-Review-Classics/dp/1590173015/

Ok, we will definitely drop that idea then and plan on overnight at least.

Next to Husum there is the island Nordstrand (since 1987 actually a peninsula).

Nordstrand is a remain of the once much larger island Strand which was destroyed in the Burchardi Flood 1634.
