I have 1 free day in Geneva and trying to decide what day trip to do. It'll be at the beginning of March and therefore not the best weather. What is better Gruyere or Chillon? Not just the castles but the surrounding area too. I will be doing the old town in Geneva the night before.

My recommendation would be to visit Gruyeres simply because there more to do there compared with Chateau Chillon. No only do you have the chateau, you also have the village itself and also the cheese factory too. If you have the time you could even visit the chocolate factory at Broc Fabrique. I've checked online and everything does appear to be open when you'll be there.

The only downside is that, if you're going by train, it does take longer to get to Gruyeres than it takes to get to Montreux

In Gruyère you will have activities like cheese or chocolate factory and the Giger museum.

In Chillon you will have all activities of Montreux and Vevey to fill your day.

So have a look on activities on both side it could help to choose. Otherwise you will have a different landscape in Gruyère, it changes from the lake.

But personally if the weather is more sunny I will choose Chillon since you can walk and visit cities or even visit a bit Lavaux. If not then Gruyère has more different kind of attractions (museums + factories)
