Place to observe the River?

We will be traveling through the area from Dublin going to Sligo in May, and are wondering if there is a park or a place we can sit to observe the Shannon River? Or a little cafe or pub we could sit at that has a nice view of the River? Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to give us!

if you're in Carrick-on-Shannon, go to Gings Bar on the bridge. Travelling from Dublin would mean you have to cross the bridge. You can't miss it. It has a terrace outside and a large window inside, down the back, from where you can look across the river. Good Guinness too.

You could park at the rivers edge near The Landmark Hotel and walk along the river a bit then over the bridge and into Gings.

Plus 1 for Gings, a great bar with a fantastic 'garden' that overlooks the Shannon River. You could also take the 'Moon River' boat trip from just outside the Landmark Hotel on the opposite side (as said above) if you really wanted to enjoy a pleasant trip on the Shannon. :)

If you prefer a cafe, Coffey's which is on the roundabout at the bridge in Carrick fits the bill.

They have an upstairs with big windows to look out over the river.

Another lovely spot is Harkins bistro at Dromod harbour(10 miles from Carrick) just off N4. Wonderful views of lake Boffin.

On your way from Dublin to Carrick-on-Shannon, if you want to stretch your legs and/or have lunch, a short little diversion to Tarmonbarry (Termonbarry) on the border of County Longford and County Roscommon, will take you to where you can walk along the banks of the Shannon:

Take a walk on the boardwalk opposite the Landmark hotel.

If you are lucky, you might catch the beautiful elegant swan family.
