GOR Round Trip on Road Ideas ?

Hello, Im driving the Australian coast line from Nov 7 till Nov 14. So, I have 7 days, I guess.

I was thinking :

1st Day : Drive from Melbourne to Apollo Bay

Stay for 2 nights in Apollo Bay

3rd Day : Drive to Apollo Bay to for 2 nights in Warrnambool

Stay for 2 nights in Warrnambool

5th Day : Drive from Warrnambool to Lorne

Stay for 1 night in Lorne

6th Day : Drive from Lorne to Torquay

Stay for 1 night in Torquay

7th Day : Drive from Torquay to Melbourne

So, is it good to go ?

Or shall I make any changes ?

Instead of backtracking along the GOR I would spend two nights at Halls Gap in the Grampians followed by a night at Ballarat. Another option could be to extend the loop by heading to Echuca on the Murray instead of stopping a night at Ballarat and return to Melbourne. I'll post some links later in the day.

I agree, I would not backtrack.

Edit: Didn't I just reply to you about the same topic on another thread?

So from your other thread, you obviously hate the idea of the Grampians. If you just want to stick to the coast, that's fine, no need to start a new thread.

So maybe continue along the coast to Port Fairy for a night then back along the GOR to Lorne or Anglesea for a night.

Or back along the GOR to Lorne for a night followed by a night in Geelong to explore the Bellarine Peninsula.

All the best

Stay for 2 nights in Apollo Bay

3rd Day : Drive to Apollo Bay to for 2 nights in Warrnambool

Stay for 2 nights in Warrnambool

5th Day : Drive from Warrnambool to Halls Gap

Stay for 2 night in Halls Gap

7th Day : Drive from Halls Gap to Melbourne

There are so many options to your itinerary.

Depending on what your sightseeing/schedule focus is, I'd kinda go the one night option along the GOR. Melbourne to Lorne (1night) Lorne to Apollo Bay (1night) Apollo Bay to Port Campbell (1night) Port Campbell to Warnambool (1night). I say this being that we live in Apollo Bay and are from a town just past Warnambool, we travel heaps ourselves, offer Airbnb accom & have witnessed other travelers go through this itinerary dilemma. It's great you've got so much time to soak up each place. If you did two nights in each you have the comforts of staying put, but you will spend hours going in circles to see everything.

Hope this helps

I had checked Port Campbell before choosing Warnambool for the 2 nights, but people asked to choose Warnambool.

I went down the GOR today as far as Apollo Bay and couldn't believe just how busy it was. The shopping strips with cafe's at both Lorne and Apollo Bay were flat out and we lost count of the number of tour buses and campers of all shapes and sizes.

Be aware of the need to factor in at least .30 minutes travelling time between Lorne and Apollo Bay. The road was reduced to one lane in at least 3 places with traffic management procedures in place with both men with stop signs and temporary traffic lights controlling traffic.

Some of the road works hopefully will be completed by December however at Shrapnel Gully there is a new bridge being constructed with a completion date of May 2018. The speed limit in road work zones is posted at 40 KPH which must be adhered to even if there are no works taking place. We found the road very narrow during the areas where road works are taking place and it is essential to maintain total concentration.

Safe travels
