Snorkeling from Port Douglas

Concerned about condition of coral reef and fish after recent cyclone and bleaching events. Considering Airlie Beach/ Whitsundays as well but think that area may be more devastated. First time senior visitors from USA. Great snorkeling in Hawaii and Caymans in the past. Advice from anyone with post cyclone GBR experience would be most appreciated.

There wasn't a vyclone in Port Douglas this year. It did however hit the Whitsundays hard. Airline Beach (which has no beach) and a few of the islands were badly damaged. AB and Hamilton Island are back up an pd running but repairs continue. Some others remain closed until next year. I'd go to PD and take the snorkel tour with Wavelength.

You do know you can't snorkel from the shore but have to get to the reef by a 90 minute boat Ride?

Note no snorkelling off the beach (unless at Lady Elliot Island or similar) - need to do a boat trip to outer reef for best coral eg Wavelength from PD.

Just went on the tour with Wavelength (which I highly recommend). Sadly, it seemed about 50% of the reef was bleached. Still saw lots of fish, a sea turtle, and others saw a shark. Hope that helps.

@"it seemed about 50% of the reef was bleached" - very bad indeed. things aren't looking good.

Is there better places to go out on the reef? Seems from Hervey bay some operators go to the southern end of the GBR, but this involves a short flight to Lady Elliot island.

You are actually better to snorkel from Port Douglas than Airlie Beach. If wanting to snorkel from the beach

- Lady Elliott Island or Heron Island are the best spots to see the GBR ..

AIrlie Beach is a Mecca for backpackers, has no beach and is a good jumping off point for sailing trips. Not nearly as good as PD though.
