Yes but I would pre book everything so you know the times
Hamo to Airlie Book a ferry One hour
Airlie to Townsville
Town has a hertz and Europcar
Drive time to Townsville 3 to 4 hours
You can take the car on the ferry.
I think Sunferries are passenger only and if you want to take your cat over you need to use a different company- and it takes about 1hr.
This site includes links to the passenger and vehicle ferry companies.
Unless it has changed in the last few years you have always had to travel on the vehicle ferry if you want to take your own car over.
that should read car not cat. In fact I don't know if you can even take a cat (meow variety) over there now.
You'll have a whole lot less hassles by catching a bus from Airlie to TSV which will drop you off about 500m from the Sunferry terminal. If you need a car on the island hire a moke. The bus takes about 6 hours and I think there are plenty of them - search "greyhound buses", etc.
Many thanks. Very useful links.

Another option is to catch the passenger ferry over to Magnetic Island and hop onto the Magnetic Island Bus Service which gives you a 3 hour bus tour around the island.
Voyager...you have been given a lot of useful links and tips...
Just be aware that it will be a BIG day 6 hours there and back (just to Townsville)... 1 hour return on the ferry to Magnetic Island with another extra 2 hours on a ferry from Hamo to Airlie.. then getting a transfer into town to fill out the paper work for the car... returning the car and making the last ferry back to Hamo at around 5pm.
Myself personally would not try and attempt it in one day... I would stay on Maggie for the night to make the most of the island.
Hi Thanks for your post. What I didnt make clear was that it was one way. I plan to stay on Magnetic island for 2 nights then go on up the coast. It seems from all the comments and yours that it would be OK time wise and Ive got useful links to book the tickets.
Still there?? I need some help. My husband and I (30 and 50yrs) would like to take the Magic in mid September. The Magic departs at 4pm from Airlee and our flight arrives at 1:30pm- Hamilton Island. The tour agent tells us we can make it to ship but I just want to be sure since she also told me that if we don't make it, we won't get a refund. We are considering flying in the day before but we would sacrifice a day in Sydney. I was wondering if you think we should NOT book anything and just see what ship we could get when we arrive? Or should we book another ship which leaves laterin the day? Or just go with the original plan(i.e. leave the airport and get directly to the ship)?
We chose the Magic because we heard that did get good reviews, and looked a bit more spacious then the others we looked at like the Anaconda III and the Kiana. And I must note that though we are DIVERS we would like to see as much as the islands as possible.
