Strahan to Hobart stopover?

Hi

Planning a trip over to Tasmania from Melbourne in early October. 2 adults and a 12 year old. We will fly in and hire a car. We've been to Tasmania before and loved it. Have previously explored the east coast (Launceston to Binalong Bay then down the coast to Hobart via Freycinet) and been to Port Arthur. This time we would like to go to Cradle Mountain and Strahan.

Draft itinerary is:

Day 1 - Fly into Launceston, explore city

Day 2 - Launceston to Cradle Mountain

Day 3 - Cradle Mountain - walking

Day 4 - Cradle Mountain to Strahan

Day 5 - Strahan - river trip

Day 6 - Strahan to Hobart

Day 7 - Hobart

Day 8 - Fly home

Is there anywhere we should look at stopping overnight on day 6 or should we just make it a long day of driving? We don't know much about places between Strahan and Hobart. We will stop and explore Queenstown and Derwent Bridge (Wall in the Wilderness) on the way.

Thanks for any help advice.

It's certainly doable in a single day. Most people do it that way.

Derwent Bridge is about half way and there is some accommodation there. Pumphouse Point is very nice but expensive. The Wilderness Hotel has rooms and food in the evening. There are some rental cabins available. And there's a lodge at Lake St Clair, but read the reviews.

A little further along is Tarraleah and further still is New Norfolk with quite a few choices. But if you get that far, it's not much further to Hobart. :)

Thanks Luigi (The information you provide on this site about Tasmania has been a great help to us for our previous trips too. So thanks for all the input you provide).

Unfortunately Pumphouse Point do not allow children so thats out.

I've booked a farm stay in Hamilton for night 6. Although it's only another hour into Hobart I think it will make the drive from Strahan less rushed and allow us to take in all the sights along the way. The 12 year old should enjoy a farm stay too.

We can then drive into Hobart on day 7 (Saturday) in time to catch the Salamanca market.

I am finalising the details of my trip and have a couple of questions:

- Do we need to book the river trip from Strahan in advance or can we just walk up and get tickets on the day?

- What time do the Salamanca markets close on Saturday? If we arrive around noon will we still be able to grab some lunch and have a look around? Will we be able to find parking nearby?

Thanks for any advice.

Hi,

Salamanca stalls start to shut as early as 1 to 2pm, we always find the best time for the markets is as early as possible, we usually arrive around 8am.

The Gordon River cruises, I would book even in October just in case, and there's a fair bit of parking along the dock, you should get a spot.

Looking around, there's not a lot to look around at, and the pub puts on a good lunch, and there's a Banjo's for a quick meal, and both are just across the road from where the boats depart, there's also a few other eating establishments within close proximity.

Safe travels - Robert

If you arrive at Salamanca at noon, you may get to the tail end of the market. there may be parking available in the streets above Salamanca or around the eastern side of the docks, but the market itself occupies the main public parking area at Salamanca for the day. There are plenty of fooderies at Salamanca.
