7 days in Paihia

We are spending a week in Paihia and will use this as a base as we explore NZ for the first time. After this stay we will join a tour group for 3 weeks traveling all over the island. Looking for suggestions of day trips we can take with our car rental and for local activities to do while in Paihia. We have sailed for 30 years and are interested in possible sailing among the area for a day or perhaps a couple day charter. Also of interest is snorkeling for us and a scuba trip or two for myself. Thank you in advance for your suggestions. We will be arriving in early September.

Hi Tim, There are numerous Day drives you can take from Paihia various points of interest. I see that I have just replied to your last question regarding Biking, so if you have a rental car you could take yourself out to Kaikohe and do the Cycle the Rail Trail and then maybe visit Wairere Boulders Nature Park at Horeke Website www.wairereboulders.co.nz There is Puketi Forest north of Kerikeri in Waipapa which has a 20 minute boardwalk, Rainbow Falls in Waipapa, Stone Store, Kemp House, Rewa's Village in Kerikeri, Aroha Island out on the coast at Rangitane. You could have a look at Website www.kerikerivisitorguide.co.nz If you go further north you have a great Scenic Drive from Whangaroa round through Matauri Bay. Ten Minutes you have a small Fishingh Village Mangonui which has a famous Fish & Chip Shop. You have Russell which is the oldest town in New Zealand with the best lookout in the bay at Flagstaff Hill is well worth doing. Also South to Kawakawa which is a farming town and has the famous Hundertwasser Toilets and 5 kilometres south of Kawakawa is Kawiti Glow Worm Caves which is $20.00 cash per person to do the 40 minute tour. There are numerous Day Sailing Trips ranging from $90.00 to $120.00 per person which includes Island Cruising, Islands Stopover, Snorkelling, Swimming, Hands on Sailing, Lunch and some have Kayaking. Websites: www.bayofislandssailing.com www.bay-of-islands.com www.sailing-bay-of-islands.co.nz www.kingfishercharters.co.nz www.sailingdolphins.co.nz The Overnight Sailing is 1 day $250.00 per person, 3 meals and activities which is Freewind website www.sailbayofislands.com or there is Ecocruz which is a 3 day 2 night cruise leaving Tuesdays and Fridays Multi-share Cabin $650.00 per person or Double Cabin $1,500.00 including All activities, accommodation, equipment and meals Website www.ecocruz.co.nz This gives you plenty to look at. Kind Regards Sue

Hi Timothy

If scuba diving is a key interest, you should look at the Tutukaka coast, widely regarded as one of the world's best diving spots and slightly south of the Bay of Islands. http://www.tutukakacoastnz.com/ In the Bay of Islands, Dive North is considered amongst the best diving outfits, and they start their tours from Kerikeri which is something to consider. The Caveli Islands are a key diving spot, which includes diving the wreck of the Rainbow Warrior. Paihia is a great tourist spot, but possibly not the best if you plan to tour further afield during your stay,

I too, would recommend the Tutukaka Coast if you like diving, and perhaps you could look into a package that will take you out to the Poor Knights Islands.

You will really need a car to get around the Bay of Islands.

Personally, I find Kerikeri more to the centre of things, but it, and its attractions (as listed the Stone Store and the rest of the Kerikeri Mission, Rainbow Falls, Rewa's Maori Village, and a subtropical garden), are a half hour drive or so from Paihia. Inland from Kerikeri is a second Mission Station at Waimate North. There is also the site of a major pa at Ruapekapeka, south of Kerikeri, from the New Zealand Wars in the 1860s where Maori tried - and failed - to keep control of their land.

Across from Paihia at Russell is Pompallier Mission, a museum, historic sights like where Hone Heke chopped down the British flag at Flagstaff Hill, and, I think, several historic walks. The country's first capital was near the modern town.

At Paihia itself - well it's more a base for things. Multiple boat tours, such as through the Hole In The Rock, depart from here, as does the boat out to Urupukapuka Island, and of course Waitangi where the Treaty between Maori and Europeans was signed, is very close to town. Multiple sailing trips also depart from Paihia but this is not a thing I know much about. Good luck, and enjoy your stay.
